His scene during the trial was Academy Award worthy. He lost to Marlon Brando, who I always thought was one of the most overrated actors in the history of film. But, that's just me.
Casablanca was a great movie, but it was an ensemble movie. Without the entire cast, it wouldn't have worked. That being said, it's still my favorite "Bogie" movie. Along with "The Have and Have Not" and "Key Largo."
Part of the latter is because I'm a big Lionel Barrymore fan.
My favorite is the one where he plays Tham Thpade, The Maltese Falcon. When he explains to Precious that she's gotta go over for killing his partner...beautiful! And of course when he roughs up Wilmer and takes his 45s.
Great film for many reasons, Mary Astor being a big reason.
Speaking of Bogart, today is "Walter Brennan Day" on Turner Classic Movies. They are showing "To Have and To Have Not" at some point during the day. Along with "The Westerner", "Rio Bravo" and other movies where Brennan had a major role. I didn't see "The Far Country" with Jimmy Stewart, but it might be in there.
1. Casablanca, greatest movie ever.
2. Maltese Falcon, the stuff dreams are made of
3. Key Largo but not for Bogie but for Edward G.
4. To Have and Have Not. Ever been bit by a dead bee?
5. The Caine Mutiny, the strawberries and the ball bearings.
6. The African Queen though the ending is quirky.
Several years ago I had the opportunity to see both The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon on the big screen during a film festival at a small theater. Very cool experience.
