The new WWII Midway battle movie comes out tomorrow.

I'll catch a matinee tomorrow, wife is going to a Jane Austin marathon. It will be a bit of a struggle as I have regrets of not taking my dad to the original when it first came out. He was WW2 Navy Air Corps vet and would have liked to have seen it, but as a teenager I didn't think to invite him. Can't invite him for this one.

I'll wait for the reviews by real people, like on this forum, before deciding to see it or not.
I do like a good war movie. I hate a bad one.

I will almost certainly wait for this one on DVD.
FWIW, I enjoyed Pearl Harbor and The Patriot both - as pseudo-historical romance stories. The action and the historical themes were both good IMO, and I don't have a problem with CGI. For realism and appearance it generally beats the heck out of cheesey blue (or green) screen special effects.

Midway - History vs. Hollywood

Stumbled across this old copy of LIFE magazine at a garage sale three decades or so ago. As you can see by the cover photo, it depicts Ensign George Gay, the only survivor of Torpedo Eight. I'm not sure whether I'll watch this new movie on what I consider to be the most decisive sea battle of WWII. Looking at some of the trailers, I find myself asking why they would take such liberties in the accuracy of this amazing story. There's plenty of books to be read on this great land, sea, and air battle. Gordon Prange chronicled both the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Midway in excruciating detail. But I think Walter Lord, in his 1967 book, nailed with his comment: "Even against the greatest of odds, there is something in the human spirit - a magic blend of skill, faith, and valor - that can lift men from certain defeat to incredible victory". My mind will no doubt wander a bit as I think about my fellow Veterans on Monday - I'm sure some of my thoughts will be on the heroism of the men of Torpedo Eight.

He lived in Oak Ridge, TN, for a while and was often on TV when the "first" Midway Movie was aired on local TV stations for commentary purposes. I remember many of those events and always appreciated his comments and who wouldn't.

I want to see it. So do my millennial children, their millennial cousins and their millennial friends.

You and the Millennial's will be pleased to hear that yet another Charlies Angles TV show will be arriving soon to the airwaves near you.
So much new creativity today in Movies and TV.

I saw the movie last night and really enjoyed it. Maybe I had low expectations because of all of the above, but I found it engaging and entertaining- long but never boring.

I'm also old school and like it when the good guys win.

It is like a video game or comic book in some ways and isn't great movie making by any stretch but if youngsters see it and learn something - anything - then it is worth it.

There are stories that need to be retold often, at least once a generation.

This is one of them.

Thank you, veterans, for your sacrifices that we may remain free.
