For those of you around my age (67) you likely remember CBS correspondent Andy Rooney who was always last on 60 Minutes with an interesting commentary. He passed in 2011.
You may not know he was a WWII Army veteran drafted out of college in 1941. He became a correspondent for the Stars and Stripes the GI newspaper distributed to the troops during the war and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. He covered the 8th Air Force prior to D-Day and flew 4 combat missions. Two on B-17s and two on B-26s. He went ashore on D-Day plus 4 and covered the ground war. Received the Bronze Star and Air Medal.
In 2000 he wrote the book "My War" about his experiences. I had read it years ago and found it on my bookshelf recently and just finished reading it again. I highly recommend. There are a number of you tube videos of him talking about the war. I have attached one of them.
Wish we had more correspondents like him these days!
As a side note Walter Cronkite was also a war correspondent and jumped into Holland with the airborne.
