...Advice on Preventing "Garand Thumb"...

The wall of Nerf guns as the back drop reminds me of my oldest son's room 30 years ago! I visited their new home this Summer and my 10 old grandson's room has a wall of Nerf Guns to rival his dad's!

I suppose I'm responsible for this tradition with the racks of guns hanging in my room at the farmhouse! I just see it as the proper way a man would decorate his room!

Place the heel of your hand against the operating rod handle. ;)
I've seen thumbs busted wide open by Garand thumb. Then you gotta clean the blood out of the rifle.

So where do you get one of those toy Garands? I want one! :D

My father always called it M-1 thumb rather than Garand thumb. Sounds better I think. He showed my how to prevent it from happening. just like others here have explained. Heal of your right hand against the operating rod. But he said they also had to learn to do it without holding back the operating rod. Just shove the 8 rounds in and dont get bit. He learned in the United States Air Force. Staff Sergeant - Air Police ( before they were renamed Air Security )

I have never owned a M1. But if I ever get one
the beautiful presentation that little boy made, taught me how not to get a M1 Thumb.

HE WAS GREAT !!!!!!

I remember a scene in "Saving Private Ryan" where a soldier (Ryan?) sat a clip in the rifle's guide and slapped it home from above, with the heel of his hand. Does that actually work? I just can't bring myself to try it.

Great! At his age he probably has more fun with his than we would with a live fire one.

There's "Garand Thumb" in the US, but in Egypt there was "Hakim hand". Any milsurp collector that owns a Hakim knows about the bolt latch engagement if they value their extremities.

Seems like I remember getting bit by "M1 thumb" back in 1963, at Fort Jackson, but only once! You tend to remember what happens after the 1st time.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I think ever M1 is different due to tolerances, etc. My two could not give you an M1 thumb, unless you were messing around with an empty rifle. I have two, and both of mine require the above mentioned slap on the op rod with the heel of your hand to get the bolt to run home on a full clip.
