He eyeballed the first car that went past and when he saw the second car coming up in slow and suspicious manner he picked up his pistol, checked it, and was ready when the car stopped and the thugs jumped out.

I think you would be correct. And I'm willing to bet that he has been robbed before. So he knew what to look for.
 
Happened in Argentina, their self-defense laws and protection of property laws may be very different from those here in the U.S.
