O.K., don't shoot the messenger!

Just in case that there are forum members that are not aware of this fact, Microsoft support for Windows 7 ends on January 14, 2020. [ Windows 7 End of Support Info - Microsoft ]

This post is just a reminder of the upcoming "End of Support Life" date, to share with those who may be interested the impact, and to possibly cause someone to think about updating their "Christmas List"!

I'll admit, at my age, I'm a procrastinator. If it's not happening today or tomorrow, as Scarlett O'Hara said in "Gone With the Wind" - "Tomorrow's another day!"

I'll also be the first to admit, I'm not going to miss all of those Microsoft updates that re-configured my system, or caused a myriad of computer system problems after the updates. However, I really do like Windows 7. It's a stable operating system and it works. But, if I really had my way, I'd already be using a high-end Mac Pro but my tax software cannot be used on a Mac.

There may be some good deals on new Windows 10 systems during the holiday season, which will permit us to save some $$$ for our gun budgets. I just bought a new system last month and I'm going through the mental recalibration stages of the migration now. I'd compare the experience so far to a really bad colonoscopy!

Not a cause for panic though. Windows 7 will not stop working, just stop updating.
I'm keeping 4 operating systems running (Windows 10, 7, XP - Apple OSX 10.6) because I occasionally use programs that run on the older versions. I've found Windows 10 to do more system problem diagnostics and repairs automatically, compared to the other OS. For that reason, it seems the most user friendly, especially for non-geeks.
Of course, if you need an excuse to get speedy and efficient new hardware, Intel just released a new series of consumer level CPUs (Core i9) to accompany that jump to Windows 10.

I'm not one to upgrade until I absolutely have to. I'm running 8.1 on my main computer and XP in the garage. Support for XP ended how long ago? But I'm not having any problems with it. I wonder how long till support for Win 8 goes away?

I declined the free update to 10 a while ago because I'm used to 8 and wanted to stay with it even though most people seemed to hate it.

Someday I'll have to update, but I don't see it as anytime soon.

I run 7 and am happy with it. My wife's laptop died and we replaced it with Windows 10 on a Thinkpad, and had my local programmer/repair person set it up to look like windows 7, and to delete all the junk software they come loaded with.

WIN10 is still available as a free download. I just finished downloading it yesterday. My other 3 PC's already run WIN10. I suggest you do a full backup of your current hard drive to a USB external hard drive. Then update your pc to WIN10. If you don't like it you can revert back to WIN7. If they quit updating WIN7 does it also mean they don't update MS built in virus security? WIN10 and WIN7 virus security are differently named, are they different animals?

Same here. For what I do on my computer, Windows 7 works just fine, and my computer is nine-years-old now. My computer sky won't fall for lack of updates from Microsoft. Frankly, I wouldn't touch Windows 10, free or not.

Note: Win Media Play is not supported on Win 10 so you need to download a free media player to play a DVD or you can pay MS $13!!
Win 10 is a bit confusing compared to 7Pro, as usual they give you 3 ways to do something. Control Panel disappears but you can find it.

According to the message The Gates Gang forced my computer to display yesterday, yes, the virus updates are also going away. That. Blows. Chunks.

My oldest Windows computer is going on 12 years and still running XP without any problems. It hasn't been updated in years but still works just fine. I seldom use it to access the Internet so I'm not too worried about getting any viruses. My main computer is a MAC that has been problem free since the day I first powered it up.

Please tell me no one depends on Windows virus "security" to protect their computer? If you look up "oxymoron" in the dictionary, "Windows security" will be one of the examples used as a definition.
