I got the below Model 639 in a sheriff's sale last week. I paid $360 after commissions, which is not a smokin' deal, but OK.

I have bought dozens of guns from these sheriff's sales, and have come to the conclusion that criminals do not take care of firearms.

This one, like most of the others I've bought was absolutely filthy. And it had the case number written in indelible ink/sharpie in both grips. The grips were actually in the worst condition. I have a set of black grips ordered that I think will look pretty good on it.

It is mechanically great with a shiny bore.

I cleaned the gun up, and put a little walnut oil on the grips, and it looks a lot better.

Added some exotic wood grips I had. Makes it look cleaner

I would call that a diamond in the rough. At least that department did not electro-pencil numbers into the slide and/or receiver. I wish departments around here would sell confiscated firearms to the public, but even though it is permissible, they still destroy them.

Is there anyway to change out the rear sight that has the wings on the sides?

Millett made a sight for that cut but unfortunately the front sight required milling.

I’d say you did get a “smokin’ deal” on it. At the additional cost of a good cleaning and a pair of grips, you have a desirable gun that on a good day would probably bring close to twice what you paid for it. I say this as somebody who has been casually looking for one while stuck at home. They are not as cheap or easy to find as you would think.

I didn’t start out liking the ‘57 Chevy tail fins around the rear sight, but they are starting to grow on me. The factory ambi safety and square trigger guard are major plus marks on my check list. I’d say (with a tinge of envy) that you did very well for yourself.

Congratulations,
Froggie
