Hello all. Noob here. Well, to handguns anyway.

So, recently put a nice 3913 on layaway.

I'm leaning toward cross draw and iwb. I'm 6'1, 135#, with mild scoliosis. I lean left (no political puns intended) :D.

Because of this, my right hip (strong side) naturally protrudes a bit. I don't want to increase that by having anything else on that side. It would show really bad.

The left lean, although small, would allow a loose fitting shirt (well, they're all loose fitting given my size) to conceal much easier.

So, I know this is an older model, and support is waning. What are my options? I'm not seeing many.

If you carry the 3913 and have used the sig 239 alternatives, how well do they do as far as retention?

I really like the Vedder lightuck setup. They have a request form that gives the 3913 option, which I have filled out. They offer the sig 239 version. Just hate to spend money on something that may not work since it isn't technically made for the S&W.

Edit:

Found this one from Galco: Tuck-N-Go 2.0 Strongside/Crossdraw IWB Holster

Tuck and go 2.0 for the Sig 239 (TUC296B)

Ambidextrous setup (can be changed left/right)

Adjustable cant (forward, neutral, reverse)
Metal reinforced opening
Tuckable

Should pick up the gun and receive the holster about middle of next week.

Also, going to get some FMJ 115 and 124 grain stuff to do some first time plinking with my new to me first handgun. :D

Actually kinda getting excited now. Never was big into them. Will be meeting up with my brother next weekend at a range near his place to let him inspect it and then we'll try it out. He is already CC and is very knowledgeable about all things firearm, so I'll be in good hands.

First, welcome to... where am I? Oh, yes, the S&W Forums! :)

I have not used that particular holster, but I do have a similar one from DeSantis, their Sof-Tuck IWB holster. I've used it for years to carry my S&W 6946 and it also works well for my 6906 and my 439. I find cross-draw carry to be less concealable for me and a bit unnatural if I have to draw from a standing or prone position. As for retention, most IWB holsters, and especially the soft leather and nylon types, get retention by squeezing the pistol between your body and your belt.

Speaking of belts, IWB and OWB holsters all work better with a relatively thick and wide belt. Those skinny, 1 inch wide dress trouser belts tend to allow holsters to pivot. I use 1-1/2 inch wide stiff leather belts and I buy trousers and jeans with belt loops wide enough for a 1-1/2 inch wide belt.

First off what are you flying my friend?? that's the most important question of all isn't it, lol.... I own and occasionally shoot my 3913, it is very handy, and I actually like its manual of arms fairly well....

However, most of my range/carry experience is with 1911's and I much prefer a single action auto, for reasons' I'll expound on briefly in a moment. My latest toy is an M&P .40 5" with a thumb safety, going back to my 1911 preference, if I were to everyday carry, I would opt for that same weapon in a compact version, it just feels very handy and familiar, "TO ME!", and that's what's most important.

So I LOVE my 3913 to "look at", and to shoot. Its my first choice when I pick up something for "SHTF" and it must remain discrete... BUT, that first and most important round is double action. A long, busy, distracting trigger pull for "ME", I'm not gonna lie, I DON'T like it, and I haven't played with it enough to know where that first round is gonna go?

So it's a wonderful first time CCW, and I would put it in the "very safe" category. I'm sure if you shoot it, and play with it enough, you will LOVE IT! I would encourage you to play with it a lot, under very controlled circumstances, until you are very confident in the manual of arms and how it operates, I do like the hammer drop feature, I just have a difficult time "myself" with that long and "safe" double action pull on the first round.

I would practice a lot, since it sounds like its your first serious weapon, you won't be handicapped by decades of muscle memory with another system. I would drop the hammer and practice that double action pull a lot.. now the single action pull of following rounds is amazing, and its a very accurate weapon..

So I'm rather certain that you will be very happy with it, for what its worth, the 3913 was reviewed very favorably in its day. It is very solid and well built, and its beautiful, I have the "Lady Smith" as I love the look and feel of that gorgeous dust cover that sweeps up toward the muzzle, it is an amazing weapon, accurate and reliable....

Yeah I went DA/SA because of my 1st weapon. The really neat thing is, it does have a spurred hammer installed on it. Not the original flush mount.

Either way, I'll be doing a lot of DA pulls for training.

Update!

Got the holster a couple of days ago. Made for the Sig 239. The 3913 fits nearly perfectly in it. The opening apparently has a thin metal band sewn into the edge, so it doesn't collapse closed while the gun is out, yet is still pliable. The clips may leave a bit to be desired for the long term as they are plastic, but it comes with two different clip styles and is nicely adjustable for cant or hand preference. After playing with locations, I am probably going to go appendix carry on my support side. It fits and conceals the best there on my skinny self according to the mirror.

Still need a dedicated gun belt and the Nexbelt ratcheting offerings have my attention. Unfortunately, work just ramped back up in a wide-open format, so all of the classes I want to take for training will probably be on hold till it settles down, so I'll have plenty of time to build my carry gear before I am even able to carry concealed.

Did manage to pick up some 115 grain FMJ stuff. Store was out of the 124 grain. Plinked off a few rounds with my brother today while at my parent's place for father's day. For a noob shooting about 25 ft away from a target, I'm not too bad.

Brother also hooked me up with a few rounds of hollow point so I can have some self defense stuff at the house for now. Ammo is scarce right now.
