I have wandering taste in firearms and bought an AK a few months before the COVID plague. I never got to shoot it but have picked up some cheap Tul ammunition before the panic buying began. I've been watching its availability at one LGS and to my surprise Russian steelcase Tul 7.62x39 is relatively plentiful while everything else has disappeared. Counterintuitive. I would have thought preppers and doomsday hoarders would hoard AK ammo. Have the Russians flooded us with ammunition? That would be red meat for the conspiracy theorists.

I went to two of my local stores today and both had more ammo that I'd seen in a while. Their gun inventory was improving as well. Still loading components continue to be in short supply particularly primers.

I was at our everything store today, a guy had like 25 boxes of .223 in the check out line. But 9mm was in short supply.

In addition to around 1500 factory rounds I only have 1000 .223 55gr SPBT bullets to be reloaded
I'm buying 1000 .223 75gr HPBT bullets from a guy liquidating his deceased buddy's reloading stuff for the widow. I'm giving him $100 for 1000 of them and feel like I'm getting a bargain.
I went online to AmmoSeek and searched for .223 bullets and the cheapest thing I found was 40gr pills for 23 cents each PLUS shipping!
That is NUTS! The 1000 55 gr I mentioned above were just under 6 cents apiece pre-COVID/pre-riots.

Here're the ammo shelves at the Portland Cabelas. The Sportsman's Warehouse in Longview is the same. I have better luck at small shops. I have a honey hole where I've recently picked up .357, 10mm, 45 acp and 5.56.

Yesterday I was in a gunshop, had an extra $100 to blow on ammo, and picked up 2 boxes of 9mm at $14.42/box, a box of .357 at $26.42/box and 2 boxes of .30-30 at $18.82/box. Blazer brass 9mm, Federal .357 & 30-30.

I was in Billings, MT two days ago and stopped at Cabelas. This was their selection of handgun ammo:

This prompted me to look locally yesterday. Plenty of ammo in stock of most all calibers and prices about normal. I guess everyone around here must be all stocked up.

Yep...that our Billings Cabelas store.....lots of nothing on the shelves. Scheels is a bit better stocked however.....

Was in the neighborhood so stopped by my local Cabela's earlier this evening. Very little handgun ammo (25 and 32 acp). Tons of shotgun ammo and seems like a lot of rifle ammo (except 223/556).

I stopped in Gander (Roanoke VA) a week ago,,
They had one box of 12 gauge slugs (a box of 5) for $4 per round,, ($20)

Then there was a white box of Winchester 38SPL (box of 50) for $44.95.
Other than the 38SPL, there was a couple boxes of 460 something pistol ammo,,
I guess no one is hoarding 460 pistol ammo,,

I doubt I will darken their doorway, again,,,

Sportsmans in Roanoke is about the same,, plenty of #8 shotgun shells, and steel BB shells,,

I am truly fascinated (and I don't use the term loosely or very often) at the wide disparity between what most members are experiencing (empty shelves) and yet others are finding quite the opposite (pistol & MSR ammo in stock, reasonable prices, no limits).

The thing is that I can't tell where a lot of this oddity is occurring since many members don't say where they are from.

Things are crazy where I am behind enemy lines in moonbat MA and adjacent states. God bless those of you who still have access to whatever you need or desire.

I wonder if some of it is a persons perception or expectations. If a person wants a box of shells and the store has 2 boxes the store has plenty. If a person wants a case and the store has 2 boxes there is a shortage.
My thinking is when a person gets on the internet and can only find a small part or none of what they want there is a shortage. I think another sign of a shortage is high prices for what little is available. I don't "think" there is a shortage. I "know" there is a shortage. Larry

I can remember when people would tell me 9mm was not worth reloading as they could buy it cheaper. Well I wonder how that is working out for them now. As far as places that have plenty of ammo. I think that is rare. Here in Florida there is pretty much none. I look online to just see whats out there and there is nothing for sale even at high prices.

I don't know if anyone reading gets the NRA-ILA bulletins, but it is absolutely terrifying what a certain political party is planning to do regarding ammunition regulations if they take control. Background checks for every ammunition purchase and prohibition of any person-to-person ammunition sales, even gifts. Just for starters. You think ammo is difficult to get now? Just wait.
