I bought what appeared to be an awesome Pre model 27 that is near perfect, or so I thought.

Upon getting it home, I began to go through it in order to give it a good cleaning and so forth but upon doing so, I found a crack in the frame.:eek:

Do you think S&W might be able to repair this and does it pose a safety issue?

A common question, because all S & W Hand Ejectors have a sideplate with an almost invisible seam where it meets the frame. In this case it is just a little more visible. :)
 
Since it does not have a screw at the top of the sideplate, where you have the "crack", and it has no model number it was made during the short time frame between the deletion of that screw and the beginning of model numbers. September 56 to June 57. Now, there was a time lag between change orders and actual production, then when it went out the door. That means you cannot depend on that period for a production date.
 
Unless you have the experience and the know how do not attempt to remove the side plate without adult supervision! There is absolutely no reason to unless you are a high volume shooter!

You will thank me later!

...or want to inspect, clean & lubricate internal parts.

Removal of sideplate by tappy-tap-tap isn't brain surgery.
 
Beautiful revolver there. They will never ever make'em like that again. Keep it and care for it well.

When you discover the truth of the "cracked frame" you are hit with a feeling of Glorious Elation and Happiness followed by a feeling of ...Gee that was dumb ... why didn't I look at a parts diagram before posting that ... the sky isn't falling after all .

You're not the first to assume the crack is a crack and wont be the last ... Time to go shooting !

First off, you're so correct ... "Boy do I feel dumb" but perhaps the best part of this forum is having such a vast pool of knowledge and the ability to learn more every day!

That's a nice looking Model 27... except for that hideous crack! Tell you what, since it looks bad and will explode just by thinking about loading a cartridge into any one of the chambers, just wrap it up and place it in a plain, brown, cardboard box and send it to me for... uhhhmmmm... "disposal". ;)


Be sure to write on the box, in larger letters, "Not to be opened by wife". :D




Now, in all seriousness, that's a nice looking Model 27. Looking forward to reading a range report.
