Colt 1911 with Ivory

Semi-autos or revolvers, makes no difference. There's just "something about blued steel and ivory"!

Count me as another fan of blue/dark color 1911 with ivory color grips. These are faux ivory from Eagle Grips.

Pre-Series 70 Colt National Match. Only photo I had easily available. Wood grips are Herrett's with a coke bottle style bump...I only have seen two pairs of these wood grips. Sold one and kept one.

OP, awesome combination. I would not worry about the ivory cracking or easily damaged at all. This is basically a non-issue (consider nature's intended use ).

Yup.

So many people have liked this gun I though I would expound a little on its history.

At the time I bought it several years ago I was looking for a pre-war commercial Colt that I could turn into a carry gun. This one had enough wear that it didn't cost a lot. I sent it to a well-known gunsmith with the instructions to fit a barrel, do a trigger job and install some better sights. He also hand checkered the grip straps, lightened the original hammer and did a few other invisible modifications. I wanted it to still look like something that would be consistent with the 1920s, i.e. no beavertail safeties, Novak sights or other modern-day stuff. On a whim I decided to letter the gun while he was working on it. I discovered that the VP of Sales for Colt (D.G. Phelps) used this gun as a sales demo for awhile before turning it back in. It then went to a retailer in Springfield. The carved ivory grips are also from the 1920s or 1930s and the front sight has a flush mounted ivory insert.

All these beautiful guns with Ivory grips. I look at them and think..."What else is there to do to a 1911? Ivory stocks on an American icon is about as close to perfection as it gets."

Well we could color case harden the frame like on this Kimber 100th Anniversary 1911

Or we could have the grips scrimshawed like Esmeralda O'sheehan's work on my 10MM Auto longslide, THOR's, grips

I love Ivory grips on 1911s. All these examples in this thread are beautiful.

I have a pair of giraffe bone 1911 grips but they are a bit too fat for my hands or at least they feel chunky. Any suggestions for Ivory or faux ivory grips that are slim? Can be checkered or not.

Check out Dan Chinnock.......he makes a faux ivory grip.
