Made a "Panic/Prudent Purchase" this evening

Just obtained a nice vintage 20 ga. pump shotgun.

Wanted to be sure I had ammo to shoot at the trap line. So I looked online and could only find a 250 round case of Winchester target loads: #8 7/8 oz. 1200 FPS. $89

Went ahead and got it so I know I will be able to take the shotgun out for a couple of spins at the 16 yard trap line.

I call it a "Panic/Prudent" Purchase

All the local places I frequent have tons of birdshot, it's only the slugs and buckshot that are scarce.
Cases of Federal or Winchester in 7 1/2 or 8 shot are $40 to $50 at Walmart or Sportsman's Warehouse.
Not sure I'd pay $90 for a case.

Well, O.K., you must have a lot of excess cash. I don't.
My point being, I haven't seen shelves cleaned out anywhere of birdshot.
If you hate Walmart that much go to Cabelas or somewhere else.

There hasn't been a run on birdshot, at least not yet.

This case will last me a long time and it's good to know I will be able to shoot the new acquisition when I want to.

Shotgun ammo appears to be having localized runs. In my part of AZ there is no "regular" shotgun ammo to be found. Cabelas has steel shot and some 28 gauge, but the standard dove & quail loads have all been gone for about 2 months.

We're smack in the middle of late dove season, so that may be part of the issue I'm seeing. Dairies => Doves => Hunters

The OP mentioned "Winchester Target" ammo... if he got a case of Winchester AA 20 gauge for $89 to his door, that's not too shabby. I load my own generally for the little clay bird shooting I do, but that price is near my break point for where I buy instead of reload. That's how I keep a good supply of reloadable hulls as well.

No personal experience you understand, but I understand bird shot in a 28 ga is a little light even for use on lawyers... at least that was what Dick Cheney said.

If it's AA then $9 a box is not really bad. That's premium target ammo and you are paying for those nice AA hulls that you can reload about 100 times.

A friend told me today that 20 ga. seems to be more scarce than 12 ga. some that could be part of the issue.
I was going off availability of 12 ga. birdshot which seems to still be plentiful, at least in central Arizona.

And yes, AA brings a higher price. I missed that.

I discovered a while ago that 20 gauge fills my shotgun sweet spot. In my case, it's in an appropriately scaled over and under, but the principle remains the same. Congratulations on your acquisition, regardless of whether it was by panic prudence, or providence!

That's not a panic purchase at all, it's just straight up prudent.

A panic purchase would be if you had bought some no-name brand AR/AK or a semiautomatic double stack pistol with a mixed bag of loose ammunition because some YouTuber says they'll be restricted/taxed into oblivion next year, but you totally got a good deal on it because said YouTuber had a Coupon Code for 5% Off at whatever outlet is providing said YouTuber with ammo, and they have "the very best prices on the market" according to said YouTuber, which are in fact, among the most inflated prices on the market.
