Keep seeing ads on "social media" for these ultra bright flashlights. One claimed like 90,000 lumens. Showed them cooking an egg on it. I mean, yeah, they throw alot of light, but I've had enough flashlights that got switched on in packs and bags. Not sure I'd want one that would set fire to the contents of my backpack. Especially if I was wearing it!
Anybody have one? And do they have a safety or something? And do they really throw what I see in the ads?

Don't have one. Highest output I have is a Quark that puts out 360 lumens. Although, I once had my 6P when it still had an incandescent bulb and 60 lumens switch on in my pocket. Got warm enough it left a red mark on my thigh through the pocket material.

I have been eyeing the Olight Perun 2. It's a right-angle light that can put out 2500 lumens and does produce some heat. It has a built-in proximity sensor that reduces the power if an object gets too close.

What's funny is that when I was using my incandescent/60-lumen 6P back in the 90s my coworkers referred to it as a "death ray" because of how bright it was. Sometimes I wonder what they'd think of the lights we have now.

The current flashlight wars seem a little silly to me and are mostly for bragging rights. What's the point and how much light do you really need? 800 lumens is fairly common these days and is more than enough for the vast majority of people. It's actually too bright in a lot of situations.

I've had good luck with SureFire and Streamlight products. I put a Malkoff Device in a 20 year old 6P and it made a world of difference. It upped the output from 60 to 265 lumens and increased the run time. I'm also a fan of the Streamlight Stinger's. They're well made, rechargeable and put out a lot of light. The company stand behinds their products and they'll probably still be around in another 10 or 20 years. I doubt your can say the same for a lot of the current custom branded lights that are made in China.

FWIW, I want a higher-powered light for the longer throw when out-and-about. However, I don't need 90,000 lumens. Probably don't even need 2,500 lumens. At the same time, given the same size as lights I currently carry, it'd be nice to have the option of more power if needed.

Around the house, I've determined that about 200 lumens is the max I want to have on hand. My nightstand light is a 6P with a Malkoff 200-lumen warm flood lamp assembly, which is ideal for my needs/wants. Plenty of light, minimal glare off white walls, and faster recovery of my night vision after turning it off.

I used to have a Surefire E2 back in the early 2000's when they were still not that common. Once I was doing a service call at a hospital and several maintenance guys were showing me something up in a ceiling. They all had their pocket mini mag lights out shining on whatever they wanted to show me with one guy up on a six foot ladder. I was standing behind all of them and got my surefire out and shined it up in the ceiling. You couldn't even tell if any of the mag lights were still on. The guy on the ladder was so startled, he almost fell and the rest all turned around instinctively and looked directly into the light. When they got over their shock, they all wanted to know what it was and where I got it. Within a couple of months, they all had Surefires of one form or another.:D

I bought a large, but cheap LED flashlight from Lowe's last year and it's called the phaser in our house. I doubt the lights on my first car were as bright. Thank goodness for the reduced power settings.

I've still got my old MagLite. It was more useful as an attitude adjustment instrument than a flashlight, although it served both duties well.

Had a car come blasting past me while I was working a wreck 20 miles west of Cheyenne in a blizzard.

I threw the light at the car, and it went through the windshield. A Nebraska State Trooper returned it to me after apprehending the car several miles in to Nebraska.

I´ve got an Astrolux FT 03. Seems to be a quality light and is supposed to be a real thrower.
Check it out if you wish.I have not yet tried it because it came without a battery (26650) and it was only a few days ago that I received one ,a MXJO battery 3500 MAH.
Regards, Ray

I've actually been using the Atomic Beam style. Several brands but the same thing basically. Cheap, throws good light, runs AAAs not some wunderbattery. Buy 4 at a time and scatter them around. But I would like to upgrade to a better grade.

I want a flashlight where I can feel the constant recoil of it from shooting out so many photons.

You want something in the 40 mega-watt range....

Well I saw the website and it seemed way too small to be 90000 lumens. So I did some googling and found that the company was taking orders but not shipping products.
