1970 Muscle Cars

Any of you guys seen a pair these? It is about the rarest and fastest 70 model made and one of my friends has one he is restoring. These are factory stock heads and intake. He has a hp AMC on the back burner also. I snapped these photos this year.

I never owned a 60's-70's muscle car, but I sure wanted one! The closest I came was a 1969 Bonneville with a 428. I got it for $400 in the late 70's. It had about 60,000 miles on it and some rust on the body.

I had a local vocational school fix the body and repaint it the same color. While they were at it, I had them remove the emblems, nameplates and chrome side dent strips, fill the holes and black-out the grille.

When they were done, I added new shocks (air shocks in the back), tires, brakes and dual exhaust. I also put in a Pioneer rack style stereo system with Visonic David speakers on the package tray.

The car needed leaded premium, but only leader regular was available at the pump. I worked around that by going to a local airport and filling (4) 5-gallons cans with 108 octane purple aviation gas, that I mixed about 40/60 with leaded regular. It was a highway beast! There were no side pillars, so it was completely open front to back with the side windows down.

I loved that car! It was stolen out of parking lot when it was about 10 years old. It was later found stripped and totaled and the thieves were never caught. :(

I don't think I have a photo of it, but I found this one online. It's close, except for the blacked out grille and de-branding.

4 door hardtops....

Weren't they something, as close to a rag as you could get, I know your pissed off feeling about having cars stolen, I've had two stolen and you feel so bloody violated, I've got a chock, a wheel lock and an alarm on my truck, I also changed my exhaust so the cat is removed and put away, big thing around here.
428? That would put you in the back seat, I remember back then the cops on highway patrol had '66 and '67 bel-airs with rats in them, very quick.

What was neat about this time is even your garden variety 2 door coupe or 4 door sedan for family cruising might have a big block 454 or 428 and would run like a scalded dog (like Dave's old ride in post 23). I can't believe the idiot thieves stripped it—that would be the perfect ride to take a crew on a crime spree. I bet it would out run most cop cars of the time and stock it would look like preacher or CPA would drive it—not a gang of bank robbers!

My 1970 Torino GT. It came with the 300 hp 11.0:1 comp with the closed chamber heads. This is the only picture I have on the car.

I pulled the engine down to freshen it up a bit and installed a 1971 351 CJ cam with Sig Erson racing tappets, a Shelby dual-plane intake, a Holley 4150 780 cfm carb, dual point ignition and a set of Hooker Headers.

I had a lot of fun in that car. Everyone hates getting beat by a Ford.

"Friends cars" This is my friend's 1969 Mach I 428 SCJ 4-speed.
Today this car has only 27,000 original miles on it. Its 100% original.
It hasn't seen sunlight in over 4 decades.

71 Dodge Demon 340. Very similar to this one but in brown.

And a 71 Cutlass Supreme that was faster than most people gave it credit for. This is an actual picture.

I have always prefered the lines of the Supreme version over the regular Coupe. Same with the Grand Prix over the Tempest/LeMans. I loved the Hurst Olds models built on the Supreme body.

Had a 67 Lemans and 66 Tempest back in the 70's when I was a kid. My current hot rod is a 67 Tempest, 468 BBC, muncie 4spd, narrowed 9 inch Ford.

1969 Plymouth Roadrunner. Ordered to my specs from the factory.
383 cid, 335 hp, 4 speed Hurst on the floor. Bronze Fire Metallic with black stripes on the hood.
Had 6 miles when it came off the trailer.

wyo-man

My '69 was the same color, but a hard-top with a cream-colored roof. It was the only one the dealer had in stock when I went in. I was disappointed that the motor was painted blue instead of the Road Runner orange until I found out it was a "police interceptor" motor and 3.23 ratio differential. It was very fast, but not quick off the line.

I kept it about a year and a half. I had to sell it because I got married and my new wife couldn't drive a stick. I still have her - wish I still had the car too.

In Dec. of 1967 I bought a 1968 Galaxie automatic 428. I ordered it black wall tires and small hubcaps. I told the dealer to have the factory not put the little 428 emblems on the side but he said that was impossible. It still looked like a family car and I had a lot of fun with it. Larry

It was mentioned that the muscle car era was dead by 72. I was in high school in 75-79. I knew a lot of guys who bought those old late 60's cars and built them out. Gas was expensive, but parts were cheap, available and the kids had plenty of time on their hands.

I was always a muscle car guy, even way before I was old enough to drive. Wish I had pictures of the ones I had. Even more I wish I still had those cars, LOL!

Here is the only pic I have of my Old School 1970 Cuda, 440, 4 barrel, 4-speed with the pistol grip.

I'm still, at almost 65, a car nut, The last pic is me with my 2015 Sublime Green Challenger Scat Pack. At 392 CI, 485 HP and 485 Torque with the 8-speed automatic, it by far outperforms the 440. Even still, I would take my old 440 over the new technology. It was just so much fun to cruise Main Street in that red beast. Just don't know if my worn out left knee would stand up to the clutch.....

I owned them in the 70's but they were all from the 50s.

'56 Chevy 210 2 door post
'56 Chevy Nomad with pushed by a little 283 vette motor. Could NOT keep rear ends in that car!
'56 Chevy 210 2 door Hardtop Business Mans Coupe. Still own it with 61k miles on the odometer and it is about to come home looking the same but will all new running gear so it is fun to drive. 235 ci straight six and cast iron 2 speed Power glide with no power steering or power brakes was a workout!
