I bid on a bunch of stuff in a local online auction this week. Won a few items including a nice pre 17 K-22. But that is not what this post is about...it was the ammo. Holy Cow there are some seriously warped people out there. I watched a bucket of 22s called BYOB with 1100 rounds in it sell for a worlds record I think. The high bid was $450.00 I kid you not. And there was some Remington STS 410 skeet loads that sold for 32 dollars a box. I have 10 flats of them amd 6 of the Federal 1600 round cases of 22s so I am finally gonna consider myself RICH! well mildly so. Most rifle ammo went for 2 to 5 times normal prices and handgun ammo was absurd too. Primers were crazy too selling at 120-225 per 1000. Sheesh. And I feel there are signs that this craziness was getting a little better. But....maybe not!!

Patience, patience - these are people who have no idea what ammo prices are outside of the current environment. They want it, they have the money, so they buy it, Simple as that and to each their own. This will end. I think prices may be a bit inflated when it does, but that will be due to material cost increases. We all know what to do and when to do it.

This will not end till people stop panic buying and paying the prices asked. So who knows how long that will take. Till the stimulus checks are depleted? I have enough stuff to reload for revolver for awhile and lots of .22s. Outside of that it would be fire stuff that you have no pressing plan to replace, keeping a minimum in reserve for whatever, besides plinking. Thus alot of hardware will set idle for a long time. I will not invest any money in ammo that I think is subpar or junk, just to save some cash.

To many folks that do not know any better with to much disposable income. Couple that with all the new first time gun owners, who do not know what things are really supposed to cost and now you have the "Perfect Storm"!

Sounds like the Billings show last weekend....

I stopped by the local gun shop and indoor range today. They had stopped selling powder and primers and couple of years ago because it didn't sell well there. I bought pretty much all the primers they had at $25.00 a thousand cash. The boxes were dusty. Well they must have decided to start back in the reloading stuff as they have powder for $58.00 a pound and primers for $119.00 a thousand so I guess they decided to get back into the business. And no I didn't buy any as I don't need them and not sure I would pay that if I did.

Sounds like you've made a good commodities investment - copper and lead bullion. Enjoy the schadenfreude!

I've been telling myself not to acquire anymore new firearms that I can't reload for right now. Well, last year I went against my good judgement and purchased one. I got all geared up to load for it and now there are no bullets. I had everything else secured before covid except enough bullets. I knew about primers and powder but I never though bullets would be a problem. .312 dia. bullets disappeared.

Time to buy a lead pot and molds. :-)
Alternately, don't despair and start calling around. I can vouch for SNSCasting.com having 32s as of a week ago and I suspect there are other smaller casting houses that still have stock.

Demand driven by panic.

Seems panic drives the demand. Whatever is responsible, the results are the same. Limited availability and very high prices. Now the panic thing seems to be a real driver in some cases..... remember toilet paper a year ago? Interestingly, at least locally, after the shortage subsided some 'hoarders' took their over-supply back to Costco and Walmart for refunds. Guess what? No refunds, so wipe away knowing there is lots (for now).

So might I have a shot at $2500 for 5000 rounds of CCISV unopened case

Everyone who stocked up from 2016-2019 these are the greatest of times!

I think most folks who have been through these shortage cycles tend to "stock up" during the times of plenty. Just how much they stock up is another thing. I have a friend that has in the excess of 250,000 of .22 LR setting around.
