BREAKING NEWS - Supreme Court takes up NYC Carry Law

Associate Justice Amy Barrett is a 2nd Amendment rockstar.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed. I expect Chief Justice Roberts to side with the Liberal Justices giving us a 5 - 4 win.

I'm cautiously optimistic that NYS will finally see some decent 2A reform. Though I'm sure any decision will be mooted by arbitrarily and bureaucratically ridiculous wait times and requirements in most of the downstate region.

New Jerseyians are waiting as well, We will never get it through our state government.

If ruled in our favor wouldn't it just mean the have to accept a petition for a permit. What about limits on who can be issued a permit, what it covers, etc etc. I am all for it but saving the 2nd Amendment? hardly

The Roberts Supreme Court has been relatively narrow in it’s decisions which is why Heller and McDonald have not been as big of win as we hoped for. Plus we don’t know how he is going to rule due to President Biden’s comments about expanding the number of Justices on the Supreme Court.
Still narrow favorable decision by narrow margin is still a win.

For people arbitrarily denied the right to carry outside of the home now and in the future, this means something. And I didn't say save the 2A, I said 2A rights...big difference.

We have no way to know why at last four Justices decided to hear this particular right to carry case. But I think part of the motivation might have been the following false assertion — by the attorneys for New York Sate — that the second circuit agreed that the 2A protects the right to carry outside the home:

the Second Circuit proceeded from an under- standing that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to carry firearms outside the home for self-defense.

If true, then how is an ordinary citizen supposed to practice this right? Rather, to get a carry permit in New York State you have to demonstrate that you are not an ordinary citizen. Perhaps this total lack of candor was the tipping point.

What I wrote on the parallel thread:

Both FOX and CNN commence their online coverage of this case with this:

The Supreme Court announced Monday that it will hear a major gun rights case over whether ordinary citizens can be legally prohibited from carrying concealed handguns for self-defense outside their homes.
This appears to be a very narrow issue and in my opinion will not have a significant impact overall on gun rights. They can use Heller and McDonald to narrowly rule on New York's concealed carry permits without broadly ruling on anything else.

See post #9 above.
