Question for our resident experts who've performed this 10mm conversion on their own 4013s, or have done this work for other forum members:

I've read how the stock 4013 mags are modified for the 10mm cartridge.

What about the 10XX-series 9-rd mags? What mods are needed to use them in a converted "1013"? I have a bunch of these 10mm mags, picked up over the years. All have the white followers and Wolff XP mag springs.

Also, if the 10XX mags have to be shortened to fit the 4013/1013 mag well, what is the resulting mag capacity?

Thanks in advance for responding!

Thanks for the link, Guzz!

Only had time for a quick scroll thru, so maybe I missed it, but I didn't see where BMCM addressed my 10mm mag question.

The nubs on the side of the magazine need to be ground off.

Trying to shorten 10xx magazines would be so much labor and time, it would make more sense to buy 4013/4014 magazines and of course if you shortened them they would no longer work in your full size pistols.

I use my 10xx full length in my 1013/1014 pistols, just as I cn use my 1014/1013 magazines in my smaller CS10s

Please don't even consider shortening a full size 10mm magazine. You would likely destroy it. Those are worth a mint. The 4013 mags are still less expensive than the 10mm mags, but the prices are going up.

For some reason, S&W decided to add a nub on the 10mm mag and it is in a different place than the 4013 mag, so the mags will not insert in the other without cutting off the nub. Guess they didn't want someone sticking a 10mm in the 4013 by accident.

Grinding the nub off the 10mm mag will make it work in the 1013, but you have now defaced a $100+ magazine. It will stick out about 1/2". If it was me and you really don't mind grinding off the nub on the 10mm mag, I would buy one 4013 mag, convert it to 10mm then keep the full size mags for backup with the 9 round capacity. The 4013 mags hold 8 rounds.

You might want to ask around and trade a 10mm mag for a 4013 mag if that is what you really want.

If you have good 10xx mags why not swap for 4013 mags - Or sell the 10xx and buy some 4013 mags. If I remember last time I bought mags the 10xx were going for $100 +/- and the 4013 single stack mags were half that or less.

While on the subject, has anyone ground off the nub and used in a 1013? Do you have pictures of the modified mag?

Thanks,

That's likely the simplest solution.

Question on the 4013 mags (not the 4013TSW mags) ...

I've read they have an 8-rd capacity in .40, but apparently converting them to 10mm requires removing a spacer to accommodate the 10mm's COAL for feeding. Then when you add the 10XX-series white follower, plus a Wolff XP mag spring, capacity is reduced to 7-rds.

Anyone know if that's correct? Thanks.

Yes, spacer has to be removed...it is quite simple to do. Only problem is the dimples that were made by the factory to keep the spacer in place. Some people file them out...BMCM came with a solution of milling them out (in the post). I did the modification to my mags and I milled the dimples out.

The other thing that is important is to trim the white followers...the instructions on how to do this is also in BMCM's post...this is not hard to do with a milling machine...not sure how to do it properly with hand files...(IF the white followers are not trimmed to fit in the narrow lips of the 4013 mag, then capacity could be reduced by 1 round).

I changed my springs to Wolfs extra power springs and capacity is still at 8 rounds.

Another important thing: extractor force must be at around 8 pounds to prevent any issues. Extractor spring force is checked with a Warner gauge...(also in BMCM's post)...

I have shot 200 rounds through mine with no issues...haven't shoot more due to the price of ammo...

hope this helps

Yep, you seem to know this TSW mags are totally different.

My 3 converted 4013-1013 mags hold 8 rounds fine.

I actually took the new wolf spring and put it in 3 of my 10xx mags and used the old 10xx mags in the 1013 mags. Holds 8 rounds and has been 100% flawless so far. If the Wolff XP springs are too stiff, you could always cut off a coil or 2 to get the 8 rounds. Seems like I actually used the factory spring in mine the first few range trips and it worked fine. I added the 10xx spring later. I do feel better using the 10xx spring as it doesn't flop around in the mag as much as the 40 spring. You do have to cut an angle on the left and right top edge of the white follower to match the red follower you replaced.

You can pop the spacer out with a screw driver and maybe pliers if needed. I milled out the dimples with my benchtop mill also, makes it purtier. You could cut it out with a dremel and it would work just as well. A file works also if you are patient...

I am a bit OCD, I ordered the 10xx spring base plates and just installed them yesterday. Yeah, the 40s ones worked, but I like the one that fits like it is supposed to.

Now if I can just find (2) finger groove mag bottoms for my 2 mags with the short ones. No one has them in stock.

Appreciate the follow-up and I did re-read BCMC's post.

I actually have about 5 or 6 spare white followers and those black flat base plates for the 10mm mags. Still new in the wrapper.

What milling machine are you guys using to mod the dimples and white follows? Link maybe to a source?

Why not?? mill/machine the small groove in the frames Magwell needed to allow the 10mm mags work. Looks just like the factory ones on your 4013 magwell. The nubbs on the mags are in different locations between 4013/10xx mags…Just make the relief cut in magwell where the 10xx mags would pass through on the 10mm gun? Then both mags will work?
