If I was going to do that I would use a 4 way vise to hold the gun. Then position the mount and clamp it in place, use it to locate and then drill the hole through, remove mount, install tap in chuck and turn by hand,, any binding stop back up a bit and then go till it binds again. This method gives the tap perfect alignment with the hole which is critical with small taps. Then install mount using that screw and go to the next location drill and tap.
Go all the way through. Sight screws do, factory tapped guns do. Tapping a small blind shallow hole is tough. You can not use a tapered starter tap as tip bottoms out before it does much. So you are starting out with a small plug tap. Not impossible but, it you break that little tap off in a blind hole you have a real problem.

Have the cylinder out. Once mount is secured carefully file screws flush with bottom of top strap.

Here I am tapping a screw hole for a adjustable rear sight added to a 10-7

Drilled and tapped the old 17-4 and the screw holes are drilled thru the top strap.
Scope mount's base screws are even with bottom of strap.
Forgot if it was tapped to 6/32" or 8/32" cause we ain't fussy and that Smith is not going anywhere.

We have mills, drills presses, various vises etc etc so measure or use the mount as a guide.

Depending on your tools on hand the brain trust here might be able to guide you along....
Or help build a Flats Boat with Sonar, Radar and a proper grilling area. :D

Ok i wasn't sure if they went all the way thru or not drilling and tapping not a biggie I'll clamp base in place and locate holes thanks!!

weigland base is ordered and the tools from brownell's finally arriving tomorrow hoping to get gun drilled and tapped in the next couple weeks i'll take some pics of the process if anyone is interested.

yes it's a 617 no dash built 2001 no screw holes not a biggie i have access to a mill so i have everything coming to drill and tap gun just finished crown chamfer and crown refacing still at .006-.007 gap so i feel it should shoot but can't be sure until i get a scope on it for ammo testing ??

I know I'm dying to get to the range after all the tweeks I made I hope it shoots !! Some days I can shoot one hole groups open sights then the next it goes to s..t so scope ain't gonna lie !!!

Should look like this
Drilled and tapped last night but that very front mount screw is extremely close to the open sight screw hole any one have a pic of theirs ? You think they would have engineered that differently?

On revolvers that are factory drilled and tapped the screw that holds the front sight on uses front scope-base screw hole.

When I find a new 617 pistol I plan on buying it. I always thought the new pistols were drilled and tapped for a scope mount like the Weigland mount. Is this correct ? If this is the case what model am I looking for ? What model number of 617 made after 2001 ? What dash number would be on the 617 ? I really hate to have my gun smith drilling on a new 617 pistol and not do it right. Look forward to your thoughts. Thanks. Marty

mine built in 2001 i think the next ones they started drilling and tapping maybe 617-1 ? or maybe 617 no dash had holes drilled maybe the folks here can expand on that? the only thing i don't like about the scope mount holes is the very forward hole is extremely close to the open sight base screw hole !!

Ok. I always thought the weigland mount used the same holes hat the iron sight holes. Thanks for your help here. You sure have a nice set up going. Man that illuminated pistol scope is really nice. Marty

i spoke to weigland this morning he tells me that it is normal to be very close to the open sight screw hole he said some guy's report that there is actually over lap of the two holes at times if i had known about this prior to doing this i would have relocated the front hole on the scope base since mine had to be drilled it would have made no difference and it wouldn't be bugging me so much !!
