Another Ammo at Walmart Report

Cabby’s in Gainesville had Winchester 333-packs of .22 HP’s for $22.95. Limit was five boxes but I could only afford two on my C/C :(. They’ve had 9mm ‘practice ammo’ for several weeks at $19.95. Picked up a Wrangler while I was there … I needed another .22

I was in Wallyworld the other day to pick up some paint. As I was passing the ammo counter I saw they had Federal bricks at pre-Covid pricing. The sign said limit 2.

The attendant was speaking Spanish to another guy at the counter, and also to another worker. The guy bought 5 bricks and he sold it to him.

I was next in line. I asked him how many he had. He said 15. I said I saw the other guy buy over the limit so I'll take 15. m He gave me a dirty look but proceeded to take them all out and put them on the counter. I needed a cart to get them to my car.

I really didn't need them, but you can never have too many.

WM is now my preferred supplier.

I heard of some people complaining that new production CCI mini mags were having failure to fire issues?
My stash mini mags is from mid to late 2018.
My WM only has the Winchester X 300rd boxes for $40.18

Remember the long gone days of Perfecta ammo at WM.

Went to a nearby community just West of Atlanta Saturday. While there I stopped by wallyworld to pick up a cheap coffee maker. Well , no coffee maker. The Sporting Goods section was in sight so I walked back and asked if there was any chance that he’d have a brick of .22LR? He politely said no, but I do have these for $21. Federal.22 AutoMatch 325 ct. It’s the first time I’ve found.22’s at any local Walmart in a long time.

$22 and change otd was no bargain, but low enough for me to bring one home. It wasn’t that long ago this same ammo was $12/box. I was quite surprised to find any .22LR this soon after Christmas.

A side note, I’ve seen the same stuff elsewhere for as much as $49.

I was having tires replaced on our Wagon Queen Family Truckster at WM yesterday. Walked through the sporting goods and saw WW, Federal Automatch, CCI Mini Mags and Std. Unfortunately no Stingers. I have a good supply of the Automatch and Mini Mags.

Hopeful sign at any rate. My local Academy has started to have ammo come in and actually sit on the shelf a bit. I’ll have a look at the Walmart at some point. I visited a Cabela’s recently and their ammo shelf area was reduced from over seven aisles to one. Still it’s trickling in. When the Academy starts to have reloading supplies like primers, I’ll say that normalcy is returning.

The Walmart in Pahrump, NV, just replaced its gun and knife display cases with fancy new ones. They have plenty of long guns, most of which are brands I am unfamiliar with. Conversely, they have little ammo; a few boxes of 28 ga shotgun shells. What they get doesn’t last long. Over the hill in Vegas, the Bass Pro, Sportsman’s Warehouse have a good supply, but still a little pricey. If anyone needs .224 Valkyrie, both places have an abundant supply that I believe has been sitting stagnant throughout the pandemic.

Walmarts around here have gotten rid of all their guns I didn’t think that would happen, but I guess the liability is just too great. Ammo cases are nearly empty but academy and cabelas have lots of ammo except for .380.

What liability does Walmart have that no other store has?

About a week ago found the Federal AutoMatch 325 for $21, a few CCI MiniMags for $12, and 50ct SV CCI for $5. First I have of any .22 at my local WM here in north east TN for a long time. I did notice they have raised the price on a sleeve of Federal 12ga game/target to $29-used to be $21-22.

I’ve been lucky at my Walmart in middle Tennessee they usually stock every month or so a healthy supply of 22lr. Varying brands and denominations for pre-Covid prices. But unfortunately all good things must come to and end and the last batch they had in stock I noticed a $3-$5 increase across the board. Still better than cheaper than dirt but sucks none the less. Just like seeing 1 pound containers of powder in stock at sportsman’s warehouse for $44 a pound.

Our Walmart in Warrenton (near Astoria) stopped selling firearms and ammo. The gun case is filled with pellet rifles now.

I did find some good deals there back when they did, though.

Local Walmart actually had some ammo today. Two or three boxes each of standard rifle calibers 30-30, .30-06, .270 etc. For .22 they had CCI standard velocity at $4.83 (price went up) Federal auto match $21.16 for the 325 round box and still a quantity of those stupid Winchester commemorative 300 round yellow boxes for $40.18. 100 round boxes of CCI mini mags were $10.50
I picked up 20 gauge target loads Winchester 7 1/2 shot for $6.20 a box.

I actually have 4 Wal-Mart stores within 10 miles of my house. 2 are in one county and 2 in another. 2 used to carry guns but no more. None have ammo other than a little 12ga shotshells.

Today I look at the Ammo case in my local Walmart.
They had a fair amount of ammo.
Oh my - is that CCI Stingers?
Ring the Bell, a Lady comes over.
How Much are the Stingers? She seemed to have a problem getting it, but finally reported $8.74 a box.
I’ll take all four!
No No Cowboy! Three Box limit!
OK! Three!
$28.28 out Da door.

I’m an old guy and been through this shortage and inflated price deal several times. Prices probably won’t come all the way down to pre-pandemic prices due to increased labor and transportation costs and inflation in general.

An old guys advice, when prices get down to a more reasonable level, buy, buy, buy everything you can afford. Stockpile! This isn’t anything new and it’ll happen again.

I have enough primers, powder and billets plus loaded ammo to last quite a few years but I’m still buying when the price is right and I’m planning on buying more when prices drop.

"nother" old guy here. Did just like you. I'm still happily banging away. Seldom shoot the little 9mm........Prefer calibers that start with 4.
