ammunition 38 SPL+p in revolver 357 magnum

Remington 158g LSWC-HP+P are the choice for me in all my 38's. My older and new j's, my 70-year-old M&P, even my GP100 357. Never want to ignite a 357 inside the house, if I can help it.

I would think that "Igniting a 357" inside a house, at night, would be akin to a religious experience right there. ;)

Carried Federal .38 +P in my 640-1 also. No issues at all. This was a backup gun while assigned to CID.

I personally wouldn’t use 38+p’s for defensive rounds in a firearm rated for 357 magnums. The ballistic testing I have read about (Lucky Gunner), for various 38sp+p brands, leaves a lot to be desired… Poor expansion, if at all. Many of the 125 grain JHP defensive rounds have great expansion and meet the FBI penetration criteria.. although over penetration can be an issue.

You might want to check out the results with the Remington LSWC-HP +P 38 loads at Lucky Gunner, rather surprisingly Good for such an OLD load.;)

125 gr. ammo in 38 spcl & 38 +P in K frame 357 Mag. revolver is Okay .

It isn't simply the shorter 125 gr. projectile ... the other part of the 357 magnum picture is the amount of fast powder used in 357 Magnum Loads ... it produces a lot of hot gas ... and short bullet or no ... it's going to eat away at forcing cone and top strap .
The 38 special & 38 spcl +P have less powder ...ergo ...less hot gas .
Use them , I shoot all manner of 38 spcl & 38 spcl, +P and 38 spcl +P+ in my 357 Magnum Revolvers ... But ... big but here ... clean your cylinders with a brass brush and solvent just like you clean the barrel , after every outing ... this will prevent the dreaded "Ring around the cylinder" ... Clean out the crud and you will never be cursed by the Ring .

Ruining a .357 chamber with .38 Specials is one of those very slightly true things that has become unquestioned Gospel among those who think themselves gun-savvy. Yes, you CAN ruin a .357 chamber with .38's -- IF you shoot it thousands of rounds without cleaning, ever. For the average shooter who cleans his gun after shooting, even just occasionally and not very well, such damage will NEVER be a problem.

Ruin the cylinder? How? What kind of damage are we talking about?
