I need to carry some anti snake therapy on my a.m. walkabouts.

The only pocket gun I have that will serve that purpose is my Ladysmith.

Will an occasion firing of snakeshot out of that gun cause any issues ?

TIA

Not at all. But years of experience has taught me that the #1 best anti-snake medicine is a whippy green branch about finger-thick and 4-5 feet long. Whip the biggest snake right behind the head --- dead snake. Won't even disturb the neighbors...

I usually avoid but with the dog with me now I need a plan B.

He's not woods savvy yet.

I can't see any possible harm it would cause. Sneks look out!

Get a good snek field guide so you can identify the good from the bad. I’ve had several moccasins in my face this year that my Colt Woodsman had to talk to. But I’ve jumped a pair of black snakes near my range backstop several times while mowing that I’ve left alone. They do serve a purpose by eating rodents and bugs. Had a green snake try to get under my house one year as he was hanging on the crawlspace air vent screen. I picked him up and released him in the woods.

Only good snake has bullet hole in head or goodyear tracks on it's back.

If you are referring to the various slimy snakes:mad: that inhabit "The Swamp"...?

Or, perhaps the Water Moccasin that well may be native to your geographic area (or, neck o' the woods, if you prefer?): then you are correct!

As far as most of the other sneks are concerned they are actually a vital part of our ecosystem and don't really deserve to be dissed!;)

Cheers!

P.S. How could snakeshot possibly damage a revolver?

The only snake I’ve ever seen in NM was Pygmy Rattler on a trail on a cold day.
He was kind of sluggish trying to get some rays.
He didn't respond to the folks looking at him.
Then a Dog came up , he went berserk!
I took a stick and flipped him off the hiking and biking trail.

So here is my take:

Snakeshot is worthless
Carry self defense rounds
Carry a hiking stick
Be aware
Walk away from any snake

I have only had to shoot a few rattlers ON MY PROPERTY that threatened my animals

Otherwise in 25+ years of hiking the desert, I just make noise and if they rattle, I toss a rock and they go away or I walk around them.

The ones I shot, I shot with my self defense ammo. Head shots. One 135gr Speer gold dot from a 442, and one 158gr fbi load from a 4" model 19. immediate head explosion and bye bye.

The one I used snake shot on took three shots from my model 19. One of the cartridges lost the cap from the recoil, made a mess (CCI Stuff) and the snake suffered a bit before death.

The one I shot out of my 442 locked up the cylinder when the case separated from the plastic cover and interfered with normal operation. I ended up realizing I didnt have to shoot the poor thing and moved away then came back to coup de grace it with a speer gold dot once I cleaned the snake shot mess from the cylinder so it didnt suffer because shot one only hurt it.

Even snakes deserve clean kills.

I am not a fan of snake shot unless it is birdshot out of a shotgun.

I don't know of any snake in North America that will chase you down. They want nothing to do with you. A rattle snake rattles to warn you to leave him alone. If you listed to that warning you are fine. Rattlers eat rodents which is a good thing.

You never did say what type of snakes are in your area.
As for your dog, just teach him/her to come to you when you call. That will keep your dog safe. Teach the dog, don't kill the snakes. (unless you are going to eat them of course)

About the snake shot, it will not harm your gun.

I have eaten Baked Rattler.
Yes! It tasted like Chicken!
Really Boney Chicken!
Blue Racers will chase you!
Kid legend down South.
The Blue racer is one of the faster Snakes so it don’t slither out of town.
It hauls ***!
So when it moves out we just knew it was coming for us!

A good friend of mine, a PH who lives in Zimbabwe, uses this method. He has killed a number of very dangerous snakes including mambas. At night on walking to his tent he carries this as well as around his home that is built in the kopjes. He kept score at his house well over 200 snakes.

Where I live the rattlers really don't all rattle...and when they do it isn't very loud. Long as they stay away from the house I leave 'em alone. Round the house or in the yard...toast! I'd just as soon they stayed away. We have chickens. most people here think chickens chase the snakes off. I hope so

Unlike most snakes, the Cottonmouth (or Water Moccasins) are extremely aggressive snakes which actually will attack and strike at much larger animals (including humans), especially in the water and in wet areas.

No foolin'!

Not really evil, just that they can be pretty dangerous as their hemotoxic venom is potent.

Cheers!

Ok, good info.

Don't plan on shooting anything but vipers and only if I have to.

But if they intersect with my grandkids or my dogs, then adios muchachos...
