What is 88 octane regular?

True, and for good reason. 2-stroke vs 4-stroke is totally an apples to oranges comparison. It is harder to get the kind of compression ratio needed to burn alcohol cleanly in a 2-stroke, plus alcohol doesn't mix as well with 2-stroke oil as petroleum-based fuel does.

On top of that, ethanol absorbs water, which is another reason to keep it away from boats.

Another very good point. The fact that it is hygroscopic makes it good for removing trace amounts of water due to condensation inside a car gas tank, but it also makes it a poor fuel for really wet conditions - like in a boat.
