Bored, Made Presentation Boxes! (UPDATED)

So the question is ... how did you affix the stars and how did you keep them straight??

Believe it or not they are done by hand. Once you do it a few times you get the placement.

Nice work, now get ready for some request for orders !

I really enjoy doing theses boxes, it would be a privilege to make some boxes for fellow enthusiast and just good people. Im going to finish up the natural box and see how I feel about the process and time it takes. I have some additional creative options I’m putting in the natural box. Should have it done by the end of the week.

Well I finished the clear box with a 1911/2011 Commander (Ed Brown) and small American flag insert. While finishing the second box, the FedEx driver saw what I was making and asked me to make him a box. So I guess I’m officially making these now.

I’ve gotten comfortable at the inserts which are always the hardest on these projects. The boxes are made of pine and cedar which keeps the price down a little and makes them very light. Here are some final photos, give me your thoughts? I’m think of putting a small latch on the front.

Beautiful boxes. How do you get the inserts done so cleanly

A lot of trial and error. Like anything else, you need the correct tools. Scroll saw is mandatory. And then just take your time. Measurements need to be accurate so it doesn’t look sloppy.

I like them. It's clean, tight work. If you're going to offer these for sale, it might behoove you to offer a custom inscription on the box. It looks like you're handy with a router and a reason to buy your box instead of something off amazon.

I like making glued up panels. That said, were I going to make a lid like that, I'd probably inlay the alternating stripes. I'd start with a glued up panel for stability, of course. Mostly because I like doing simple inlays, but also because I like the way they look.

Very nice work and I wish you well with your endeavor.

The lid is alternating pine and cedar for the stripes that have been glued. These are pro types of sort. The inside possibilities are endless. I appreciate the feedback, always looking for good ideas. I have done inlays in the past, can be time consuming. I’m retired, so this more of a hobby, just don’t want to give them away either. Looking for a sweet spot for cost.

My goodness that is some really good looking work you've done there. You seem to have a talent, it's very clean with a really nice finish applied.

Does the wood on the cover come like that or are you gluing up the different woods to give it that parquet look? If so, which woods are you using?

Yes the stripes are cut and the glued and run through a planner. I’m using pine and cedar, but you can use any woods. I’m using these because it’s a rustic look and keeps weight and cost down.

Finishing six boxes, if any of you are interested hit me up. I can do any gun you have, all you need to do is send me a trace.

Very nice, you might check out Brusso brand hinges, they make the best.

Yes they do make very nice hinges. I’m going to be using a brass hinge like you see on the dark box for this next round of boxes. I just finished up the frames, im starting to take requests if anyone on the forum is interested. Giving forum members a discount.
