Newish car pet peeves - add one more to the list

I was talking to my buddy today and he told me that buying cars went to,
the "Dark zone".

Sales men are being weeded out, new cars on the lots are not going to happen, you have to buy straight from the companies and the old come on in and finance your car at the dealership is not going to happen.

It's going to be all "Apps" and the only thing that will be on a car lot is service people and no more extended "Bumper tp bumper".

I hope he is wrong but you never know in these times.

He told me a dealer offered him 15k for his 9 year old auto, that he paid 10k for
if he came in and bought a new car, of the same make, in this 2022.

Am I missing something ??

A/C that defaults to inside air every engine start.
High beams that auto dim below 20 mph and if an oncoming vehicle is a mile ahead.
Door locks that don't unlock until engine is shut off. So much for dropping someone off at the curb.
Seatbelts that lock up continuously every time you move.

My F-150 has a navigation system that talks. It warns me to obey all traffic laws, drive safely and use voice commands, every darn time I enter a destination. When I don’t need it anymore and cancel the route, it second guesses me and and asks if I’m sure I want to cancel the route.

Of course it uses a woman’s voice and I can’t eliminate the warnings. If I wanted to be nagged like that in my own vehicle, I’d take my ex-wife with me!

Always confirm the route cancellation. Otherwise you will forever remind you of the time you didn’t.

When you start your truck, do you really want it automatically jumping back to 70 when you put it in gear?

I believe he’s talking about the master on off not the resume feature.
I love the adaptive cruise control on my Subaru and the mustang works like a charm and lets me concentrate more on what’s going on around me, especially on long trips. The $1000 option package on the Mustang includes that as well as automatic breaking or what they called pre-collision braking.
I love the rev matching on the Mustang, The Subaru also does it when I downshift with a paddle on the steering column. Makes everything much smoother. It is always spot on.
Automatic high beams on the a mustang turn on the highbeams over 32 miles an hour and turn them off when detecting that I’m following or see approaching car. They look great and are easily defeatable as is the Lane keeping system.
No auto start here, an advantage of a manual transmission.
There is a downside for the eyesight system on my 2013 legacy. Apparently SUBARU thought it was a good idea to program it to stop the car when it was going 1/2 mile an hour in neutral as in a car wash and apply the brakes to stop the car. You have to remember to disable to feature when you go to the car wash. The mustang does not do that.

I don't like not being able to work on the newer cars, or at least very easily. Even a DIY plug change is much more complicated, time consuming and expensive. Bells and whistles = $$$$$$

Man, I know what you mean! This stuff is driving me crazy!

My new F-150 has 400 horsepower and gets only 25 mpg! And it’s four wheel drive. Can you believe that?

The AC is too cold! My wife has to open a window to keep from freezing!

The cab is too quiet. I didn’t want a Lincoln. Real trucks are noisy and you should hear stuff in the bed rattling!

That thing has a stupid back-up computer camera. And a trailer hitch light. I mean, real men use a flashlight! What’s wrong with punching a hole in the license plate with the trailer tongue?

Said in jest.

We are living in impressive times for vehicles!

Yes, vehicles today are impressive.

My buddies and I were able to buy 3-5 year old cars for a few hundred dollars back in the 1970’s. They typically has a fair amount of rust because of the road salt. Vehicles last a lot longer these days and the performance is amazing, but so is the price!

I had to have the annual safety inspection. I used to go to my local garage, but I decided to go to the dealer simply because they have free coffee and doughnuts, and the job only takes about 1/2 hour. I knew the car would pass.

The showroom had no cars. The lot was empty, except for maybe 8 or 9 used cars. They have a good dozen cubicles where salesmen reside, but all were empty except for one. The number of service technicians appeared to be full and normal. The lone salesman wasn't there, so if I had wanted to buy a new car I don't know who I would have had to talk to.

The doughnuts were good.

Wow, a good description of our visit last week to the dealership where my wife bought her then new 2021 SUV. As part of the deal when she bought her new vechicle it gets free oil changes and tire rotations for 5 years.

The sales person she dealt with who had been there about 7 years was gone, and nothing to look at. I walked through the sort of deserted lot checking out the 4X4 pick ups. The newest they had was a 2019. They at least at that time had no salesman or sales manger at the building.

Well unless something bad happens I will keep my present vechicles for a while.

My gas tank always seems to need refilled after a few weeks. This problem has been on every vehicle I owned. Some lasted a week or so, while others barely lasted 3-4 days. The few cars I had that rumbled were the worst. I had some German-made vehicle that the tank stayed full for a month or so, but it had no heater.

Huge fields full of incomplete vehicles due to chips shortages and people not buying cars due to economic uncertainty.

As for dumping the dealership "experience", I'm all for it. The only "experience" I want with most dealers involves the staff lined up against a white wall and a Minigun.:(

I'm having a hard time believing there's still a "chip shortage" after what, two years? Puh leeze. Industry used to adapt to changes like this, now they come to a screeching halt and lurch toward bankruptcy because one component can't be delivered? If that's how things are, stick a fork in the car industry. Is this how they plan to get us all into electric cars?

And the parallels to primers and ammo is not lost on me, I've been saying since the primer crisis that somethin' just ain't right.

I'm an engineer, so what do I know. . . . But my 20 m$ is this:

Supply chain stinginess. The company I worked for embraced minimal safety stock and (almost) just in time inventory. No stretch capacity for yield issues or unforseen orders. It didn't take much of an issue to lock up the works. One part shortage in a product with 2000-3000 parts would stop production in its tracks.

Just our company? Nope. It extends all the way up the supply chain to raw materials. The whole chain abhors safety stock. Just like our company's gridlock from parts shortages, the problem cascades from the top to the bottom.

Kinda wish it had a cup holder on the steering wheel so I don't have to take my eyes off the road to get my beer.:D:D:D

A Camelback works well for this purpose. It might need to be vented if your drinking slows. Probably better for wine. But, is it considered an open container? Maybe you should consider an IV drip!

Rick

I have a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe. It has an electronic parking brake that won't release unless the seat belt is properly fastened. Haven't tried unbuckling it at 70mph yet! 😀
