Good morning all ,
I’m just taking my morning coffee break, enjoying my coffee and pondering the nature of things .
When I arrived on site this morning I let my dog out of the truck and the deer were back again !
This job is in Princeton BC , and the deer here are aggressive, like I’ve never seen or even heard of
Within minutes of arrival I had a doe throwing down at my dog from maybe a car length away I stood with my dog , a 60lb healer cross , and tried to look large the deer didn’t budge I yelled at it
Nothing
Went back inside the 20x14 concrete building to grab a weapon , my framing hammer in hand I stepped out the door with my steadfast companion at my heal, and the deer had closed to within 10 feet of the doorway !
I slammed my hammer against a steel post and the noise surprised the deer ,( now there are two does)
I yelled again smashing the post loudly and advancing with my arms flailing
The deer trotted off and turned to watch us from 30 ft away
Some of the residents , heard the commotion and came out to help
I began to apologize for being angry at the wildlife and the neighbours all said “no no we get it !”
One lady told me several dogs have been killed and a number of people injured from deer attacks
Another lady said “there needs to be a cull ! Are they waiting til someone is killed ?”
The resident on the other side of the site told me he went through a can of bear spray a year on deer .he said he used to feel bad for the deer , they are protecting their young .
Not anymore he says
Anyway , we don’t have conceal carry up here in Canada and I know if I shot a rifle in town I’d be in a lot of trouble .
Would you guys in America be justified in shooting a deer in self defence ?

They don't like slingshots. A compound bow or a cross bow I think they'd like even less. As far as laws in the USA, it seems every town, city, county, and state have different laws about protecting oneself against killer deer. I have a Crossman pump BB gun, and ten pumps with a BB will penetrate deer hide...so I heard! Go for a joint. (On the deer's body.)

Don't bring a knife to a deer fight.

Those sharp front hooves will tear you up before you get in knife range.

Also........we are hopefully mature adults and don't use cruel methods. ......as in either kill quickly or use non lethal methods.

But wounding with an air rifle could leave cruel wounds.

The problems with archery are mostly too many embarrassing deer carcasses littering the area and arrows that can be traced to the shooter.

Either an airsoft gun or a slingshot might discourage our overly aggressive Bambi friends.......and noise might be even better and safer.

Below is a link to an air horn on Amazon that I think will send the deer on its way in fear (don't use it when your dog is beside you).

Oh yeah, even here in America (where everything is wonderful) shooting a deer in self defense would be problematic.

Too many things can go wrong and unless you had a witness (to an actual attack) or wounds from the hooves.........sympathy could too easily go to the deer.

:)

Talked to a Special Forces buddy from Australia. Since guns are a no-no there they hunt hogs with knives. He said we grab them by the back legs and drag them out of the brush and then stab them with a knife. No thanks.

You can get a permit to own a gun for hunting or target shooting if you are a solid citizen.

I'd suggest your friend look into it (if he's a solid citizen).

Knives should be pretty much a last resort.

You have a truck? Makes a pretty good anti-deer weapon. Just an accident, thank goodness the truck wasn't smashed up and nobody hurt.

A slingshot why didn’t I think off that weeks ago ?
I used to be pretty good with one as a kid . I think I’m about to abuse my savings account lol
Any recommendations on best slingshot for deer ?

Yeah he has a couple rifles but prefers the knife method for some reason. I assume they aren't 600 pounders.

Use a hammer on a deer, eh? Ya’ll are tough up there in BC!

I’ve heard people talk about the “3-S’s” before. It usually means shoot, shovel and shut-up.
In this case, it would be smack, slice and sear! ;)

Back in the day, there was a guy who worked at the paper mill near my house. He piloted the small tug that fed the mill with rafts of logs. He once chased down and dispatched with an ax a four point buck, western terminology, that was swimming in the river. They had the grill fired up by noon.

Are TASERs legal in Canada? I'll bet a good shock from a TASER would send them packing, and without need for any bloodshed.

Failing that, maybe one of those Pepper Guns? They're like Paintball Guns, but the balls are filled with the same stuff as Pepper Spray. They're relatively inexpensive, long range, and I doubt that any Deer is going to stick around after having one of those go off in their face.
