Tracking credit card gun purchases

VISA announced today that they are instituting a specific code for gun purchases in order to track "dangerous increases" in gun sales. Just thought you might want to know.[/quote

Hopefully this gets challenged soon

Does not bother me. Guns are a cash business

If for some reason you’re suspected of bad intentions, your credit card usage is already easily accessed by law enforcement. It’s a fairly simple matter to cherrypick purchases that look suspicious.

This “victory” for anti-gun people is hollow, to say the least.

But if someone’s really concerned that their gun purchases are being monitored, just pay cash. But as another member mentions, there’s that 4473 lurking in the background forever. That form has more info about you and that gun you just bought than any receipt or record from a credit card company.

The only thing they'll be able to do with that is refuse to accept charges from that merchant code if they are so inclined. That's their right, just as we can all choose other card issuers.

There's no way to tell from simple transaction data what's going on and BATFE/FBI et all don't have the manpower to run it all down. It might be a "terrorist arsenal", it might be a Purdy.

Unfortunately this is a sign of the times with the Information Highway. Honestly do you believe this information is not already being compromised by determined individuals stealing information online? Let's take it a step further do you think there is a possibility those data collection centers for this information would willing allow this type of information to be purposely compromised?
As others have responded already the information is out there if you know were to look for it. As for myself between credit cards and debit cards and then add in shopper club bonus cards etc. with new G5 cellular tracking capabilities you are already being traced. Play by the rules but play smarter if you want to protect individual privacy.

Thanks For those of us who use credit cards to buy online and have delivered to a dealer, this be good info to know!

No worries here. Never used a Visa to buy any gun.

Doesn't impact me, I don't use Visa.

FedX and UPS won't ship a gun for me, but really, I don't ship guns that often anyway.

I'm not worried about high capacity magazine bans, I use revolvers.

I don't like black rifles, so they can ban them all they want.

So they're shutting down gun shows? That's okay, I never go anyway.

I'm a responsible gun owner, new common sense gun restrictions won't affect me.

Meh…

Pay cash or write a check. If you can’t afford to pay for it up-front, you shouldn’t buy it. Racking up debt on a credit card is a horrible move, unless you get cash back on your purchases and you pay off the total every month.

Most of the CC companies charge 20% interest or more on carryover balances. Can you say loansharking? If a financial institution would give me half that interest rate on my savings, I’d pull all my retirement investments out of the markets.

Who cares. I know my opinion may be unpopular with some of this crowd but everything is not a governmental conspiracy. Some things are just businesses doing something to make people feel good when in reality it will have zero effect. Oh wait that does sound like the government.

If you are uncomfortable with it then don't use a credit card that has the code.

They are a private business, NOT A GOVERNMENTAL AGENCY, so can do what they want. Guess I don't get the "slippery slope" argument here. If you have nothing to hide then you won't be hiding anything.

As stated before if you think LE can't track your credit card purchases now then you have been living under a rock.

Your response is to not do business with them if you want to do your part. If they feel that pinch then they can opt to change their mind.

My guess is people will posture but still keep using the credit card.

And if you want to read about the regulations imposed on the fertilizer industry and the registration of sales Google it and you will see several links to several regulations. Both Federal and State.
