Any 22 ammo as good as CCI that is cheaper?

I've always used CCI SV in my Hammerli SP20 that I shoot bullseye with. Mostly it was because it was the most available around me. Any difference in how it shoots compared to any other brand really only exists in my mind. From a reliability standpoint, it is a little better than a couple of others that I use and seems to be more tolerant of a dirty gun. I have enough CCI to keep me shooting for a long time so I don't think I'll be changing brands anytime soon. I did alibi out of a match last week because I had two bad rounds from a box of recently made CCI. The rounds did not have enough power to cycle the gun. Of course that is something that can happen to any 22 rimfire on the market. My point is don't get too wrapped up in what one is best vs something else. Unless you're getting ready to shoot in the Olympics, buy what you can find.

My wife and I probably have over a dozen 22’s and all are reliable with anything we put in them and we almost never have a misfire. I think the secret to that is keep them clean and autos well oiled.

Accuracy is another thing. Each gun has its own personality. Different guns group better with different ammo. I’ve done a few tests with various ammo in several guns and I see distinctly different results depending on the ammo. I find this true in both 22LR and WMR.

For example I have a Thompson Center 22LR copy of a 10/22 with the carbon fiber barrel and a 3-12 scope on it. The very best results without question is Federal 40gr bulk in the blue box. My Ruger precision 22WMR is hands down better with Hornady 30gr V Max.

1st target is the Thompson at 50 yds and the next is the Ruger at 100yds. Both were from the bench on a no wind day and each were 5 shots.

Those are some mighty fine groups! Sorry for the drift but gotta give credit where credit is due.

Worst for tight groups in my 22 mag. was Armscor. H.P. I believe they were. Would not buy again!!

Just remember, not too long ago 50 rounds of .22 cost more than 50 rounds of 9mm so let's not complain too much.

Aguila 40gr

Aguila 40gr works well in my semi autos but not in cold weather. It seems that the bullet lube is affected by low temps. Does not cycle well.

I’m partial to Remington standard velocity ammo for pretty much everything.

This is the stuff the military bought for many, many years. It was the stuff they gave us for competition in ROTC and the rifle team in the mid 1960’s. I buy this stuff, particularly surplus, when I run across it. I have a couple cases of it in the basement.

Of course, we used it in bolt action rifles but it’s all I use in my 22 pistols and it’s been flawless over the years either in competition, practice or plinking blue grouse in the mountains.

I don’t use any pistols manufactured in the last 40 years so my experience may have been different if I used it in more contemporary guns.

I've shot a lot of Aguila .22 Super Extra, CCI Standard and CCI Blazer, whichever one I can get at the best price. Of late, it's been the Aguila and I've had zero problems with it through my several Ruger MK's, 10/22's, or S&W 15-22. I just bought another thousand rounds for $34.99 per 500 rounds.

Oh for the days of 500 rd. bricks for $9.99.

I was a long time customer of Gander Mountain when they had their catalog. When they opened a local store they sent me a free $10 coupon. Again the next year, and again the 3rd year.

With tax a brick cost $10.07.

So, I once got THREE bricks of .22's for 7 cents each.

I have had good luck with Aguila SV in my revolvers. I have added another K-22 so I have been buying more Aguila whenever LGS has it. I have a pre model number K-22, Model 18-3, a Model 17-3, Model 34 and Colt .22 Peacemaker. No semi auto handguns. It also works well in my 10/22.

As long as it is available I will keep buying it.

I too, have had pretty good luck with the 325 Auto match Federals and every one of my Semi Auto 22s shoot the Fed 550 packs of HPs. I bought a few 1600 round boxes of Federal Black Friday specials at Scheels 2 years ago. 34 bucks a box. Look to be the same ammo as the 550 boxes. One of my M41s won't reliably shoot CCI Standard velocity

Another CCI fan here but for the 22 magnum ammo. Used to pay $11 at Walmart but lately no luck. My LGS charges $18 per 50! for CCI and Hornady. Stick with it cause the 40 grain stuff groups fantastic out of my Ruger A.

Winchester 40 grain HP and FMJ has been the Gold Standard for every .22 Magnum rifle I have ever owned or shot for the last 40 years.

Aguila and Centurian has been about equal to CCI for me when they are available.

Where do you find “surplus” .22 LR ammo?
I did not know there was such a thing.

Farmer17,

Every gun, brand of ammo and lot number will perform differently. even the same brand but different lot number will have some shift.

Let's start with .22 ammo, there are 3 categories: Bulk, Target and Match.

Bulk ammo is cheap, and the manufacturing standards are not as stringent. the box my say 1200 FPS but in reality, it could be anywhere from 1180 -1220 FPS. The majority will be within 10 FPS + or - sometimes you get no boom!!

Target ammo the standards and components are much closer therefore it cost more. It will almost always go boom!!!! and smaller or tighter groups.

Match ammo has very high manufacturing standards more QC/QA and the components are better quality. That's why it cost more. I've only had a few Eley black box not go boom. Lapua, RWS, Eley red box always go boom with very tight groups.

If your plinking tin cans at 20 yards get whatever bulk ammo runs good in your gun it doesn't mater.

If you are shooting a local club bullseye match, get better ammo and test different brands and lot #numbers to see what your gun likes best.

I use target ammo for hunting, Rimfire Challenge and Steel Challenge matches. CCI Mini-mag CCI SV

I use match ammo for ARA benchrest matches. Lapua, Eley and RWS.

BTW them guys posting picks of 1/2" groups at 100 yards with Bulk ammo is pure bologna!!!!
