I got settled in on my shooting lane yesterday and loaded up my trusty M41 with my usual CCI standard velocity 40 grain ammo. I was also using an original metal follower style magazine. With this combo I never get any FTF unless I come across a very rare “dud”.
The first shot fired fine but then the second round jammed and would not go into the chamber. I had to drop the magazine and rack the slide. The bullet head was all gouged up from the misfeed. The rest of that magazine full was fine. The next two magazines full had two more of these failures. Now I knew this was just more than a coincidence! After looking at the remaining 20 rounds I found two more bullets that were mis-shaped. They had what felt like sharp bumps sticking up on the lead itself. I put those two rounds on the side and checked every other bullet in the next box of 50-found two more defective rounds. At end of my session I pulled out a pocket knife and shaved off the bumps or “pimples” just so I could dispose of the bad rounds.
These two boxes of 50 are part of a case of 5,000 I bought years ago and have had no issues with. In fact these two boxes of 50 were the last of that particular Brick of 500. The other 400 rounds had no issues at all. Before calling CCI I will see if this was just an anomaly or a lousy case. I just don’t want to start the ball rolling on a return if this was just isolated to a few boxes.
I’m quite lucky in that my M41 NEVER jams (with good ammo of course) and I knew something was up with the ammo right after the second occurrence. Although CCI ammo is about the best quality of mass produced 22 ammo, I guess it’s certainly not immune to having a bad day on the production line. So if no other incidents occur (hopefully), I’ll just forget about it. If it happens again I’ll give CCI a buzz. My targets were less than my normal results because it interrupted my shooting multiple times, but after decades of perfect rimfire ammo I guess they are entitled to a minor snafu. I did not take any bad rounds home or take any pictures but if this occurs again, I shall. Hopefully that was that!
