HAD A UNIQUE OCCURRENCE WITH M41 & CCI AMMO YESTERDAY

I got settled in on my shooting lane yesterday and loaded up my trusty M41 with my usual CCI standard velocity 40 grain ammo. I was also using an original metal follower style magazine. With this combo I never get any FTF unless I come across a very rare “dud”.

The first shot fired fine but then the second round jammed and would not go into the chamber. I had to drop the magazine and rack the slide. The bullet head was all gouged up from the misfeed. The rest of that magazine full was fine. The next two magazines full had two more of these failures. Now I knew this was just more than a coincidence! After looking at the remaining 20 rounds I found two more bullets that were mis-shaped. They had what felt like sharp bumps sticking up on the lead itself. I put those two rounds on the side and checked every other bullet in the next box of 50-found two more defective rounds. At end of my session I pulled out a pocket knife and shaved off the bumps or “pimples” just so I could dispose of the bad rounds.

These two boxes of 50 are part of a case of 5,000 I bought years ago and have had no issues with. In fact these two boxes of 50 were the last of that particular Brick of 500. The other 400 rounds had no issues at all. Before calling CCI I will see if this was just an anomaly or a lousy case. I just don’t want to start the ball rolling on a return if this was just isolated to a few boxes.

I’m quite lucky in that my M41 NEVER jams (with good ammo of course) and I knew something was up with the ammo right after the second occurrence. Although CCI ammo is about the best quality of mass produced 22 ammo, I guess it’s certainly not immune to having a bad day on the production line. So if no other incidents occur (hopefully), I’ll just forget about it. If it happens again I’ll give CCI a buzz. My targets were less than my normal results because it interrupted my shooting multiple times, but after decades of perfect rimfire ammo I guess they are entitled to a minor snafu. I did not take any bad rounds home or take any pictures but if this occurs again, I shall. Hopefully that was that!

Probably just a bad batch on that machine. I just bought a couple bricks of CCI SV last week, and visually, they looked fine on the couple boxes I opened.

Feeding reliability? .22's can be a pain. Shooting my Kimber .22 classic rifle at the range last week, had a bunch of rough to feed rounds. This rifle has been reliable with a bunch of different ammo over the years. I was shooting Eley Tenex, a top quality round. Looked closer, and don't you know Eley is now using a bullet style with a small flat tip. Makes all the difference in this particular rifle - It just does not want to feed them. Works fine with the older, RN Tenex.

Hopefully just a bad few rounds. I'll see next week when I start a new Brick within that case lot.

I've never had good luck with Eley Tenex ammo. I think I even have some laying around but I found it less accurate than the CCI - at least for me out of my own firearms.

Interesting thread. Have had many FTF issues with CCI SV in my H.S. Supermatic Citation. Many were from magizine problems but after “ adjusting lips all would be ok for few 100 rounds. FTF would happen again. One thing is for sure, never will use Fed. target rounds again. Guess I’ll try some Eley to see what happens.

I've bought CCI SV by the case for years and shoot it in all my .22 rifles and handguns. In the fifteen or twenty years I've used it, I've had exactly one cartridge that didn't fire on the first pull of the trigger; about two or three years ago in a handgun. I don't recall the gun as I was firing several different ones that day.

Although we M41 owners are usually quite successful with the CCI 40 grain standard velocity ammo, I am aware that there are some outliers as well. The M41 is probably the most finicky pistol I own, but I am lucky, thrilled and happy that my copy loves them. Other than the few I came across last week, my M41 feeds them like butter.

I'm in agreement on the 41. I had an early one, about a '58 model for a long time. I sold it recently as I just didn't shoot it much. I used only CCI SV in it for years, but I seem to recall trying a variety of ammo after I bought it.

Are they genuine High Standard magazines? The CCI SV runs perfect in my High Standard. The Aguila SV also works well in High Standards.

Have 2 Hi Standards that came with pistol and 1 bought from the “ new” hi standard.
Just as on Army team a little oil on the works helps a lot, lol.
