Spotted an add for a Smith & Wesson Model 53 chambered for "22 WMR". Knowing the Model 53 was made as 22 Remington Jet, but could fire 22LR if inserts or auxiliary cylinder were used, and that the Model 48 was truly 22 WMR....I called and went over to see it in person.

Alas........it was indeed a Model 53, 6 inch, blue, bbl stamped 22 Magnum, hammer selector switch tight but workable, clean chambers, absolutely zip, zero, nada bluing wear even at muzzle, indicating to me that was rarely shot. Diamond checkered walnut target grips.

Priced right at 9 Benjamins, but probably negotiable.

The bad and ugly (you've heard the good): No box, No docs, No tools, No inserts, No auxiliary cylinder. Person selling had never even seen (or heard of) a cartridge named 22 Remington Jet and simply saw the 22 Magnum roll stamp when making the add. So...one look into the chamber charge holes he had to admit there was no way any 22 WMR round could enter that gun.

Did I want to make an offer? No possible way..I don't buy guns that can't be shot..I had really hoped it was a Model 48, or a 53 with at least the inserts.

After getting back home I looked up auxiliary cylinders on Flea Bay, along with inserts....Both out of stock (I suspect LONG out of stock) at Numerich, and even Hamilton Bowen custom made 22 cylinders for the Model 53 have been out of stock since 2016.

Factory ammo in 22 Remington Jet? Even more unobtanium than the aux cylinder or inserts.

Too bad, a sad story for sure, but I just can't buy a safe queen that I could not shoot even if I wanted too. Last pricing I saw was one (1) steel insert for $38.00 + S & H, and 6 or 7 years ago, Hamilton Bowen was getting $600 + fitting charges for an aux cylinder, so $900 gun becomes a $2k gun and you still can't shoot the centerfire Jet.

If anyone really wants a Model 53 boat anchor as described above let me know via PM and I'll at least turn you onto it.

Sorry..........no pics....I just wanted out after the big let down:D

Should have bought it, no reason not to buy it and shoot it. You can find factory ammo as ColbyBruce says but I prefer to load it to somewhat lower than factory velocities. The last 53 22LR cylinder I saw sell, eBay I think, went for somewhere north of $600 as I remember. And the chances of seeing another anytime soon are slim. But the 22 Jet is great fun to shoot, plenty of noise but no recoil and, at least in mine, quite accurate. For $900 negotiable I'd be going back to buy it; they sell for $1000-$1200 here without box/inserts. . . .if you can find one, and $2k or so with inserts and extra cylinder. Here's one I shoot, and one I don't.

You will need to look everywhere.
Especially online.
A while back when our local Sportsman Warehouse had almost no Handgun Ammo, for some reason they had some 22 Jet.
It really stood out on the almost empty shelves!

In the late 1960-early 1970 era I had a 6" complete with box, papers, inserts, and extra .22 LR cylinder. On a cold winter day I fired it though a partly closed vent window of a closed 1953 Chevrolet at a sitting chicken hawk. For several minutes afterward myself and the driver was deaf. Later someone offered to purchase it and it went away.

$900 for a clean example is a pretty good price for a collector, but totally understandable as unreasonable for a shooting gun if you don't already have the ammo or components.

I have been finding Jet ammo around here lately. Carl, a big ammo dealer at the shows had 3 boxes of the original Remington stuff, which I bought. The PPU, while not common, does show up. The PPU is a little tamer than the old stuff but still makes a pretty big fireball. I would have bought that hand canon for a grand.

I play "stump the ammo man" with Carl. I got him good on .284, but not for long. Still no Remington 22 Autoloading for a Model 16.

My problem would be the barrel marked 22 WRM not 22 Jet. Maybe a replaced barrel?

From the OP:

"Alas........it was indeed a Model 53, 6 inch, blue, bbl stamped 22 Magnum..." :)

That is the proper stamping for the Jet, they were not marked that way on the gun.

So what do you mean by that, the chambers were too small for the 22 WMR?
Was the cyl chambered for 22 LR?

Joe, have you found accuracy issues with the eroded ones?

This is my 6" shooter, and it is pretty accurate out to about 50yds but past that it opens up and at 100yds it has a better pattern than a group! I reload so I down load the Jet ammo and it is still as loud and as much fun as factory but has no erosion on my 8 3/8" guns!

UPDATE: I bought the boat anchor..nice gun.

So....thanks to this Forum, chock full o' enablers:D I went back yesterday and looked this Model 53 over real good. Appear to be a first year gun (s/n K 445579), 6", 4 screw, black washer, checkered walnut diamond target grips (un-numbered), blued sights, P&R, ribbed barrel stamped 22 magnum, Model 53 (no dash) in yoke, no signs of any re-blue, no barrel erosion, squeaky clean chambers and bore.

Again...no box, docs, tools, inserts, or auxiliary cylinder...just the gun. Yesterday when I passed on it he wanted $900. Today I offered $600, we settled at $700. I did tell him that if he had the inserts I would have given him the $900. He replied "if I had the inserts..the price would be $1,800 firm." So..he did "know what he had" and was only trying to gather some interest by putting 22 WMR in his advertisement. But that is exactly what caught my attention.

Regarding my stating no way a 22WMR would go in that gun, series guy got it right in post 19 above. The back side of the cylinder shows charge holes big enough to take a 357 Magnum (diameter wise).:D

I've already posted a ship date request for Roy so hoping it is a first year issue(1961) but with diamond grips and 4 screw, it should be close.

Already scouring the net for 22 Rem Jet ammo (maybe I'll get lucky) and right after this post I'm going to post in the WTB classified sub-forum for inserts. Any of you that ever owned a gun you could not shoot for whatever reason may sympathize with this itchy "more shooter than collector" guy and sell me a set of inserts if you have any to spare.:o;):)

Some cell phone late night pics to tide you all over until I can get her a little better cleaned up and better lighting.

Drooling with anticipation of some day shooting this gun with the centerfire Rem Jet loads aboard...I remain with
