As I was cruising a LGS-Range I spotted something interesting in the consignment-used case. It was marked as a Model-15 but clearly was not. It was in fact a 5-Screw M+P (pre-10) round butt with a factory original 2" barrel. It is in VERY nice shape, some blue wear on the edges and the back strap. Nice and tight, timed correctly, very clean. Original grips with honest wear but no damage. Came with an old-school basket-weave holster and two speed loaders. I wonder if this was some old cop's gun. I may letter this puppy, though it has no department markings on it. I got it for $600 OTD. Serial # C551XX. All things considered I think this was some time and money well spent. Will post photos after I pick it up (CA 10-day stupidity.)

Maybe!!

If you had a C&R license, you would have that gun home with you.
Looking forward to seeing this one.

I am picking up a 1948 M&P 38 and a 1920s Stevens "Crackshot" single shot 22 boys gun tomorrow that has been on ATF "hold" for 5 business days, because the seller was too lazy to accept my C&R, so, no guarantee my friend!

Me too. It was a very good year.

It would be pretty easy to find a ship date if you ask for one from Mr. Jinks. You may be surprised. There is a possibility your gun was shipped in 1949. My gun C23410 was shipped in September 1948. I have the square butt version. Good luck!

I would have bought it just because of the serial number. 5 is my lucky number so I collect guns with multiple 5's. My gun club number was 55 during most of my 48 year membership until I attained life member status and became 1414.

I was picking up an internet purchase from a western mass gun shop one year and the owner said, "I have another S&W you might be interested in". It was a Texas Ranger Commemorative and not being into those I was leary. He brought out the gun and when I asked for the serial number he stated, "TR555" The rest as they say is history......

My dad's lucky number was 55. He lived in a house with that number, he served aboard the YMS 55 (a Yard Mine Sweeper, it was too small to have a real name. The YMS class of ships was the smallest seagoing vessels in the US Navy during WW II) during WW II and several other 55s figured into his life. He was convinced he would die at 55, but he lived to be 88.

As he got older, he would buy the tools and gadgets that he wanted or needed, so finding presents became harder and harder. One year, I was inspired to get him a personalized tag with the ship's name on it. Dad couldn't have been happier if I had given him the keys to Fort Knox. He was the last survivor of the crew.

Congratulations on finding what I consider one of the coolest looking revolvers Smith has produced. I really hope you enjoy it.
