I picked up a decently priced 2.5" Nickel Plated 19-4 circa 1980 yesterday. I think I did pretty good on the price considering some finish condition issues, but I was able to bring back some of her luster with a light polish with some Flitz. The worst of it can be seen on the left side around the top of the grip and cylinder release, and there's a permanent light line on the right hand side that appears to be the contour of a grip, albeit not the profile of the Pachmayr Gripper Pros on there currently. That aside, there's a couple nicks and dings, but otherwise in nice shape. Mechanically she's near prefect, great lock up. I did a full strip down, cleaned and regreased all of the internals as well, no more 42 year old conjealed factory grease filled with dust and hair to add to trigger weight. I didn't get a chance to shoot her yet, hoping to sneak out to the range next week between the holiday festivities.

That all said, the one thing left to address here are the grips. Now I don't hate the Pachmayr Gripper grips, I actually have had quite a few guns that wore them, and I like how that fit my larger hands. My only gripe with Pachmayr is that their current prodiction grips dont fit very well anymore, with most having fairly good sized gaps where they come together. I have a collection of old stock grippers and presentation grips because of this. The problem here though as I discovered, is that this 19-4 example is a round butt frame rather than square butt, and the Pachmayr grips are for a square butt frame. I'd like to find something more fitting for her, wondering if you all had any suggestions. I assume that originally she would have shipped from the factory with a set of round butt magna grips, I'd like something a little more substantial though.

The other question is I guess, with a closed back grip such as these, is there any problem shooting a round butt frame revolver with square butt grips on it? I've only done it once before with a 617 and rigid plastic set of old Bianchi grips, just wondering if I'd have the gun jump around too much in a rubber grip like this if not fully supported.

Thoughts? Also Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you all!

Badger Grips

These badger grips are good and fast turn-around. Got these for a Ruger Speed-six

I believe that I recall having used SB rubber grips on a RB, but it was probably a .22LR J frame, which doesn't recoil much. Regardless, I suspect that if the grips don't move around on the gun in the store, where you can apply quite a bit of force manually, they probably won't do so on the range, either.

Note "in the store." You can save a lot of money by buying the grips in a store, by trying them on first, rather than on the net, because you don't end up buying a lot of grips that don't work.

Most specific advice on grips varies with hand size, and in many cases you will not know whether the adviser has the same size and shape of hand that you do.

That's a fair statement, what works for some may not work out for me. As to your point about trying out grips in store, this is my goto when I can, though my two goto LGSs don't stock a lot of grips. Round Butt grips do seem to be more plentiful in store though so I might find something. I am going to check when I can get back there. Else, in the past, between Numrich, eBay, and sometimes Amazon, I've done alright for grips.

Have you considered and/or tried Houge's RB grips?

I find them very comfortable and they fit my hand well, and while they are not as "robust" as the Pachmeyers, they still offer enough grip size to shoot that M19 comfortably.....

Here is my 19-4 with Altamont grips which I really like. They fit my hand very well,it came with magnas which are too small for me.

Congratulations on the purchase. There are a lot of options. Here are a couple of my favorites, an old pair of Herrett's on a Model 19-3, and rubber Uncle Mike's on a Model 65-5. Round-to-squate Uncle Mike's grips also exist, and can be found on ebay. They have a molded rubber spacer inside so the frame cannot shift.

This came up in a great post last month, below. Lots of good options.

Grips for 19 snubby ?
What an awesome thread, thank you! I saw a few sets of older Herrett stocks in thevother thread that looked really nice, I have a set that I was going g to put on my gun, but they're square buttand don't fit right. I do like a set of vintage Herretts though. Speaking of which, when did they come back? I see a website with new offerings from them now, albeit a very limited range of product, mostly 1911 grips.

Side tangent: After looking through both threads, I started to consider a set of Hogue exotic hardwood grips as an option and did some poking around on eBay. Not many to be had, but loads of rubber monogrips on there. Do people seriously pay $20+ and shipping for used rubber monogrips? A new set can be had for around that. Why?

I’ve tried a few different grips on my 19-3 but I keep going back to these Hogues.

If you’re looking for something more substantial the Hogue Round-to-Square conversion grips are great as well.
