What would your “bug out” handgun be?

A moot question for me, too. I've already bugged out and I'm on the hill I'll die defending.

But, if something did force me off the hill and having no other information about why or for how long, I'm grabbing a Glock 21 and a shoulder holster. Not sexy, but functional and reliable.

My bug out vehicle is a long wheel base, high roof Dodge Sprinter. If I bug out I'm bringing more than one handgun. I have a plethora of .22's and 9mm's and they are all coming with.

What do you do when the police knock on your door and tell you, you have to leave right now?

during the Marshall Fire the cops were ordering people out of their homes.

I like to compromise

Logistics being the bugger they are, my 5.7 X 28mm platforms. It's also about being able to carry as much ammunition as possible. 27 grain bullets weigh a lot less than 115 or 55 grain rounds.

For me, it’ll be my Kimber Ultra Carry with 6mags and 66-4 with all of the ammo that I can carry…

5.7 is a good round from all I've heard....... but not easy to come by.

My choice for a "survival/bug out" round is the .22 magnum. Muzzle energy out of a 16" barrel of a 9mm, capable of taking small game and deer, quieter than a .223. Got my first a CZ in 2011 and it will shoot <MOA at 100yds. Got a Ruger with a 16/18(?) barrel and 9rd rotary mag that is a great little utility/bug out configuration with a 1-4x20 Leupold scope an paracord sling.

Reflecting on a earlier post .... the time to ''Bug Out" is before everyone else thinks about it or after the "die off".

I did the former on 911 and was out of the Burgh and home before the SHTF on the streets of Pittsburgh.... and traffic came to a halt; with rumors of a missing plane (Flight 92) circling overhead.

Don't stand around and talk and speculate........ move. On that day my Bug Out gun was a Walther PPK 6+1 plus a spare mag........ next gun would have been a "Battlefield"pick up!

Barbara, was the first to arrive to retrieved our oldest (4) from a local pre-school.

We (4) literally bugged in for the next 3 days ....... Couldn't get hold of my 84 year old Dad who was at his cabin about 4/5 miles SE of Shanksville ....... so I drove there on Saturday. Carrying a Beretta 92 Centurion with a Beretta CX-4 tucked away and enough stuff to get home or to my Dad. (Easier at 48 than 69 :) )

He'd felt the crash and could see the smoke plume from his front porch! But the phone lines and cell towers were overwhelmed.

We were well prepped in both locations ...... with "stuff" left over from the 2000 EOTWAWKI ..... that wasn't!!!!! :)

Wow. Replies run the gamut from "we gonna do some hunting," to "we gonna be prepared for a firefight!"

Neither is true of a post-apocalypse scenario.

The guy who carries his whiz-bang, ultra-capacity 9mm is deluded into believing he's going to "win" some kind of shoot-out.
The guy who carries his whiz-band magnum revolver is deluded into thinking he's going to "do some huntin' along the way," during the bugout!

"BUG OUT" by definition means you have to grab what you can and get out...get ON THE ROAD, not likely in a nice warm, enormous pickemup truck, but WALKING...with your kids WALKING, and your WIFE walking! The entire GOAL of all government forces deployed is to get YOU out of any vehicle and on the road, or better yet, into a "camp" where food and water, and tents will be set-up and that beats staggering down the highway any way you slice it!

The first thing the military is going to do is establish cordons and blockades. You'll be required to register, each and all, and if you even BLINK suspicious you'll be pulled out and searched ALL THE WAY INSIDE YOUR AR@*h0l3! Maybe at some point there will be a sea change in the minds of government forces, but initially, expect them to tow the line and do exactly as told.

There won't be any "hunting" on the side of any roads. That's going to bring a swift response. There won't BE any carry of rifles past the first checkpoint. There won't be any carry of handguns that can be readily discovered.

The goal of government once you come out of your house and are forced to "refugee" is to render you powerless against the State.

And speaking of bugging out...to where exactly? HOW exactly? Maybe those fortunate enough to have family have options, but for most...do you really THINK for an instant all those people living up in the hills are going to sit back and let you just come a tromping on up and make yourself at home? THEY'LL call the government to report your coming!

Once the SHTF there won't be any giant pickemup trucks blasting up the highway....that's going to be shut down instantly! You will NOT be allowed to move thousands of pounds of resources just because you decide to do so.

The best answer is to start now thinking about how to lay-in an adequate supply of food and WATER, and to have strategies to composting waste to reduce as much as possible the potential for a Cholera outbreak.

Turning off and on water and sewerage will be something the government starts early on to quickly identify all those "rugged individualists" and put them in their place quickly.

So with all that said the very best weapons you can have or plan to carry are the smallest, lightest, most unlikely to be discovered. You should have NO first-tier weapons in your home that don't have suppressors because your first goal is to NOT DRAW ATTENTION to yourself.

The problem of course is they show up with magnetometers to search - even below ground level outside.

There is only one real response and that is to have already made up your mind how this is going to go BEFORE the troop deployments begin. The answer does NOT lie in social media.

There ya go, throwing reality at my nice Walter Mitty fantasies. Sheesh. The sad thing is, you are probably right. But I still like the thought problem.

Two Taurus G2C’s with four spare mags and 300 additional rounds in boxes.

You can also use Sig P226 and P229 mags in those. I just got a G2C in 40, partly because I have P226 and 229 in 40 with lots of mags.

I’ve been here on this acre of the Keystone state, surrounded by farms, for over 40 years. I think I’ll stay put and take my chances right here. Refugee’s fleeing here would probably be the more likely problem.

That said, if I did have to hypothetically flee I’d grab a 1911 and a snub SP-101. They are always close at hand, and the county unmarked in my driveway has a whole bunch of loaded mags and speedloader’s in it.

Man. You are SUPER DOOM AND GLOOM....That ain't gonna happen.....Before your doomsday scenerio could happen there would be a civil war.........Please go take a nap. You'll feel better when you wake up and realize the earth is still turning and the sun is still shining.

M&P .40 FS. I like the caliber and as a plus I have conversion barrels for 9mm and .357 SIG along with 9mm magazines for that caliber. Three caliber pistol. Both 9mm and .40 are quite popular and .357 SIG ammo is fairly common in this area also.

Seems the original question was more of a 'favorite gun if you have to evacuate due to the weather' inquiry than seriously addressing an 'end of the world' scenario. With that in mind, I'll play. One of my Hi Powers and a handful of mags would be my first choice, and I'll go one better and take one of my M1A's along for the ride. Don't know what kind of weather would lead to bugging out here in TN, but who knows.

I’ll never ever have to leave because of fire or weather. If I have to leave for whatever other reason, I’ll just go with what’s in the Jeep and the backpacks that either stay in the Jeep or are the first thing I grab when leaving every day for work . . .
