What would your “bug out” handgun be?

Glock-17gen4, with ALG mount Aimpoint Micro T-1 4MOA with a WML.

(& a few fun sticks)

Getting to old to bug and run, probably just button down the hatches and wait it out. I did purchase brown tarps instead of blue just incase.

The wife and I made it through a couple riots, 10 miles from the epicenter of the Northridge quake, and general crime conditions in LA for over 30 years. But getting out if it got really bad was always a concern. Breathed a sigh of relief when we made it to the boonies, several years before covid.
I would think if something drove us away it would be 3 glock 9s, 34,17, 19 and a Keltec 2000 glock W/ mags. Have a bunch of mags and a dozen 32 rds.plus cans for them. Also a ruger 10-22/ folding stock carbon fiber barrel with a can and a thermal. I would try to pack a LW AR and several hundred rounds but ammo weighs.
I dont fear the military. We live out 20+ miles from any big Hwy or about that from any small town. We are pretty old also,Ha. But I refuse to think any US military would go along with rounding up the entire civilian population. Notice I did not say FBI/DOJ etc.
I did make a couple small preparations...

Don't forget a Glock 26. The Sub 2000 is great to carry with a sling, and a big caliber rifle might keep things at a distance. A 12 gauge with slugs and bird shot(tungsten steel 3 1/2" BBs) may come in handy when one might get hungry. The wife loves 'vettes, but she said she would trade her wishes for one of those. That is much nicer than the Toyotas!

If I thought it wise to relocate, it would most likely be to my favorite hunting and fishing spots on our local military base. Know the river and woods there as well as most, and could be surrounded by my friends.
Like the new A-10 Thunderbolt II with new wings that carry extra ordnance and drones to attack or find a safe path. The MD F-15 Eagle is nice to have around. The F-16 Fighting Falcon is great. The Stealth fighters. Our new submarine is awesome, as well as our others. The things we are working on gives me the feeling of safety. Specially-trained men on the ground and seas. I could go on forever. Thinking about all this, think I'll stay right where I am. I'll offer what help I can, but most likely will be asked or told to stay home. It is good to have friends who offer help if needed, so I'll probably help them to help us all.

My bug out selection would be a Sig Sauer P250... modular gives me options.. full size, compact & sub-compact.... 9mm, 40S&W, 357Sig & 45ACP... 380 & 22lr are available, but not in my collection..

I don’t have a “collection” but my choice would be my S&W Compact 2.0 9MM.

The term "bug out" implies an emergency with no time to pack...jus' get out of Dodge. In that extreme case a "bug out" gun should be the closest and handiest capable of doing multi-functions...defense...gathering food, etc...all while being reliable, capable of easily finding replacement ammunition for and effective enough for any conceivable need.

Just make sure your "bug out" gun that's kept closest is a good one that can achieve the required criteria.

It will have to be my Sig 229.

Besides wepons and supplies, we strive to never let the gas tanks get under a half tank, can't bug out very far is the tank is low and the gas stations closed or has lines down the block.
