This coming Saturday is my birthday. I will be 88. My Driver's
License will expire the same day. I don't think I will renew it.
I have had a couple of driving close calls. My thoughts and
reactions are not as prompt as they once were. Thankfully
I have family members who take me wherever I need to go.

You know you better than anyone else and I realize that is a rough decision to make.

A very happy birthday to you sir!--:)

Sounds like you are making a correct but difficult decision.
Shift Gears- were you up on St. Lawrence Island?
Almost Forgot!
Happy Birthday!

Phil, you could do like about a 1/3 of the people here abouts, drive
without a license. Also, who needs insurance? Not only that there
are 27,000+ cars in this state with expired paper tags, I saw one in
Fayetteville this week that had expired back in 22, that didn't seem
to bother the young guy driving the car.
But you are doing the right thing for your own, and others safety.

TO THE PILGRIM

I was at 3rd RSM headquarters that was on Elmendorf AFB in
Anchorage. We had detatchments on Adak and St. Lawrence
Islands. And a 3rd at Nak Nak (SP?)
I don't know if the story is true or not but I heard that a Russian
sub surfaced in the bay at St. Lawrence Island one day. Caused
an Inspector General to go up and check on their readyness in
case the Russians had chose to come ashore. The story goes
that while the IG found that every man had an M1 Carbine,
however he could only find one round of ammo.

Have known AFSS and EC-135 folks who have been to St. Lawrence Island.
Never heard the Carbine Ammo story.
Have heard stories about seeing MiGs using the nearby Gunnery Range.

Phil, I appreciate your self-awareness. But...

Driving privileges aside, your driver's license is a valid, rock-solid proof of ID, and for that reason alone, I would respectfully suggest you renew it.

Alternatively, you might want to see if your state issues an official state ID, and get one of those to use in lieu of your license.

Happy Birthday to you! :)

First, happy birthday to you sir. Second, a hard decision. I just turned 77 and will have to renew my license in two years and then every two years. So far I am fine driving but very slow and sure in my decision making. Having cataract surgery really improved my night vision and maybe gave me a few more years on the road.

I have many more miles planned with my trusty Mustang. We have been together for 33 years and I want a few more years driving the forgotten two lane highways of the midwest and plains states.

Idaho offers a non-driver photo ID card that includes the RealID gold star.

If there are licensed and insured drivers still in the household, then being a non-driver may help lower their insurance premiums.

Non-Drivers

If anyone living in your household doesn’t have a driver’s license, doesn’t plan to get one, nor ever intends to drive, they might be categorized as a “non-driver.” This group might include household members with impairments that keep them from driving or elderly individuals who no longer drive and have turned in their license.

Right behind that is a guy with enough character to give up one of the great pleasures and freedoms we have in this country, for the benefit of his community.
I agree with the folks above who said renew anyhow, and don't drive unless you really, really must.

Some time back I made that same decision. The build up of scar tissue from my surgery began to seriously impede my head's ability to turn in either direction. Add to that the unannounced spasms and cramps that would try to pin my left ear to my shoulder. Massively painful.

No one asked, suggested, hinted or inferred that I stop driving.

After a spasm behind the wheel where I couldn't see to control the car it hit me that I did not want to be the cause of injury/death to a pedestrian or motorist. I envisioned my grandkids being in my car with me during an accident and that scared me.

I can easily get to anywhere I wish to go.

The only thing I had to get acclimated to was wearing a pillow case while Ruthie drives.

IMHO, why not go ahead and renew it anyway? It will give you another ID and you may have to use it for an emergency or something. You don't have to drive if you don't need to but if you need to at least you'll have it. Good luck with whatever decision you make.
