Went shopping for a 586 but no luck!

Haven't seen a 586, pre lock or new, for sale locally for many months. People are holding on to them as they will only escalate in value.

The "new" Altamont grips are comfortable but force the gun to sit higher in your hand...not sure how I feel about that yet. I thought I had a set of N-frame target grips in my stash but I was wrong. Think I'll be looking for a set soon.

S&W 586

Congratulations on your new Model 27. It's a beautiful revolver and reflects Smith's best craftsmanship.

I was shooting at my club in 2020, and ran into a new member and his daughter that had absolutely no concept of sight alignment, sight picture, nor trigger press. They were missing the target at 7 yards. I asked to see his gun thinking that the sights must be off. They weren't. I gave them both a quick class after which they showed marked improvement. The revolver was a Model 586 with a 4" barrel, for which he had paid the princely sum of $400.00, four years ago. I thought the gun was beautiful: gorgeous blue, fit and finish, firing pin on hammer, no MIM parts, no lock, and have looked for one since.

I found one, mint in box with papers, no turn line, no wear anywhere, made in 1981 with M stamp, but at a price multiple times what he had paid, similar to the increase in the price of eggs from $1.79 a year ago to near $5.00 now. I don't care. As in Monty Python and The Search for the Holy Grail, "The Quest was Over," and I would never be likely to ever find another as good.

It was a 6" barrel which I require for my aging eyes. It took me multiple years to find my first 27-2 with the beautiful checkered top strap, but it was worth the wait as I didn't have the extra $25 in 1973 when I bought my first handgun, a 6" Model 19 Combat Magnum which I still have mint in box.

Best of luck on your future pursuits, and good hunting.

All the best, ABNRGR

The 27 came home and I just can't wrap my head around those Altamont grips...replaced them with a proper set of Concalo Alves target grips.
