I'm starting up PPC again and need a 4'' k frame for the duty revolver class. I sold my 4'' 19-3 a long time ago but still have my 19-3 2.5''. I'm not too familiar with K frames.

I considered a 4'' 586 but he thought an action job might turn out better on a 19.

Was there a best "dash" of the pinned and recessed 19s? My mentor mentioned big change either at -1 or after but was unaware of anything else.

He also mentioned some 19s had patridge front sights. I searched images of 19s with patridge front sights but only saw pictures of 6'' guns that had them? Did any 4''guns have them? If so are they super rare?

Thanks

I might be wrong, but don't you shoot 38 spec in PPC?
38 Special model 10's with fixed sights, and model 14's with adjustable sights are more common than .357 model 19's, and probably cheaper. If you require adjustable sights, then model 14's are plentiful.
4" guns are usually "combat" something designation and have Baughman ramp front sights. The "target" guns, 6" and 8-3/8" come with Patridge sights, and I've never seen a 4" target model with a Patridge sight. They may exist but would have to be quite scarce.
Check back later and some genuine gurus will check in here with authoritative commentary.

The models 19 in 2.5" and 4" inches barrel used to have baughman ramp front sights because they were designed as service combat gun for law man and as a request by Bill Jordan with this kind of sigths for better draw from the holster.

The 6" inches barrel version usually have partridge front sight because were made for accuracy competition shooting (bullseye)

Forgive my bad English.

I traded my Colt Python with the Eliason sights for the 586 when they came out in the early 80s and never looked back when shooting on the PD's pistol team.

The 586 or 686 is slightly larger than a Model 19 and thus heavier. Heavier revolvers hold better, and you'll still have the flexibility of a magnum revolver if that's what you want.

All 4" model 19s will be about the same regardless of "engineering change". If you know about revolvers it should be easy to find a good one.

These did not come with the Patridge front sight standard but that is an easy switch. You can probably get a 4" 586 to work equally well but same issue with the front sight.

There are quite a few PPC revolvers on sale at present, but these are usually the then-equivalent of "race guns" - super heavy barrels, sight ribs, DAO, etc. These may not fit the definition of the duty revolver class.

Good luck in your search.

Regarding your "best" question, the -3 had a marginal improvement because the sight leaf screw (the one that holds the adjustable sight to the top of the frame) was moved away from the barrel/cylinder gap. The -1 change your friend referenced was reversing the threads on the extractor rod to reduce the tendency of the rod to back out under recoil. The -2 change involved a modification to the cylinder stop, resulting in the elimination of the fourth frame screw. Of those three changes, the -2 change is the least significant from a performance standpoint. In my opinion, the sole reason for the -2 change was cost of production. The other two were functional, albeit only marginal improvements.

I have a 19 no dash combat magnum and as far as I am concerned it is the best 19… because as of now it is the only one I own.

Tomorrow I will take possession of a 19-7… not even close in collectible or "*****in" value.
