Gasoline Games...

Last I looked, regular at my Shell station was $4.55. I also use the Kroger's points offer and usually get a 30-cent discount plus 7-cents off for cash.

I stopped in at a local station the other day. The sign read $3.09 but the pump read $3.14. OK, I'm not going to argue one way or the other. I walked in and handed the guy $60 and told him I wanted a fill on pump 10. He tells me that he is lowering the price on the first 20 gallons of gas $.20 and hands me back one of the 20's. I told him the truck wouldn't take 20 gallons and would probably kick off at 15. He hands me back another 20. I went out to the pump and put the selector on regular and the price changed from $3.14 to $2.87 - obviously more than the $.20 he said he was knocking off. OK.... The pump stopped at 16 gallons, one more than I thought but I was ball parking it. I went in to pay - 16 gallons x $2.879 = $46.064 - say $46.07 but when I tried to hand him two more 20's, he said, no, he owed me money! I thought he might have confused me with another customer, and explained what pump I was on and how much I had given him. He said I was wrong about the amount of money I had given him and insisted on giving me back $13.93! I tried arguing, but he was insistent. So I left paying $.40 a gallon - something I've not done since 1973. having been to an ATM the day before, I knew how much money I had, and I counted it to verify I wasn't losing my mind. I was right, I had just bought 16 gallons of gas with a $20 bill and gotten almost $14 in change.

While I like getting a good deal, I just can't get over the feeling that I've done something wrong. Rather than keep the money, I'll make an extra donation this Christmas.

Probably the guy was being held up and the crook had one of the employees held at gun point in the back room. He was desperately trying to send you a message and you missed it. Check the newspaper for info on the hostage situation and robbery.

LOL, NONE of the pumps in my area still work this way. The only way to "cut the pump off" is to put the nozzle back in its holder. There isn't a "cutoff" lever on any of the pumps around here anymore. I used to do this, but the stations all got wise to people draining the hose and installed pumps that don't allow you to do this anymore.
Here in Spokane the going rate is $3.89-$3.99 per gallon.
So I wait until my tank is down to 1/8 or so and drive over to Idaho where the price is $3.19-$3.29 per gallon.
At $0.60-$0.80 per gallon savings, the total savings on a tankful is still a few bucks, even after subtracting the cost for the gas to travel the extra 20 miles or so to get the lower price.
Since I was in Liberty Lake this morning, I just went a few more miles over to Post Falls to fill up today. I saved about $6 - 8 on a tankful, and it only cost me a couple of bucks in gas to drive the extra 20 miles (round trip) to get there.
Since I also combined it with a trip to Cabelas it was more than worth the few miles of extra driving.

I miss Kroger in Ohio. I used to get Sugar pies ( The Indiana State pie), fresh side meat and a lot of other thins not available at the local groceries in the area of Illinois I live in.

We had a gas promotion at the Jewel Grocery that got us .20 off per gallon. It must have been popular because the did away with it.
 
The average price here has jumped to over $4.20. The spread is nearly a dollar depending on brand and location.
 
The Circle K near my home had been the cheapest gas station in my immediate area, usually by a dime or so. The week before last they simply shut down with no explanation. Yellow tape around the pump islands and over the front door of the store. That location is relatively new, around five years, and is usually busy. Has that also happened in other areas?
 
Here in Australia, gas (we call it Petrol rather than Gas) always increases in price right at the start of Easter, Xmas, or any other public holidays. Price gouging for sure.

The only place that has done that locally was totally reboring its facility. I see no signs of a shortage.

Is it, or is it that the demand goes up so the price goes up with it - gouging or the law of supply and demand?
