Waffle House

I loves me some Waffle House, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. There's one a mile from my house, and the wife and I have breakfast there at least once a week. All the workers there are nice, know us by name, and they know exactly how we like our food prepared without us having to tell them. The prices have gone up since they opened -- we used to be able to eat there for around $10.00, but now it costs almost double that. Scrambled eggs with cheese, grits, bacon (crisp), raisin toast with apple butter, and sometimes a pecan waffle with butter and honey. YUM!!

I am going to add a footnote here. I spent 10 years in the Public Defenders office. I have seen some of the ugly side of things and had some rough clients and friends. Waffle House will hire anybody willing to work and, the folks there, work their tales off. They sell what sells. And their grill is right out front where you can see them cook. You think you do not get food that has been sneezed on or dropped on the floor in your IHOP or Denny's ??. You silly child, ask the State inspectors what really goes on. The folks in a WH are a little rough, welcome to the real world of life around the big city. At least these are working folks, out at three AM putting up with drunks, hustlers and the common folk. And not living on the dole. So give them a little credit, enjoy the food, they will take it back if you do not like it or it has an ash on it (the High Class Joint cooks just stir it in). Leave a decent tip, she somebody's mother working for a living.

I'm not a virgin. I've been around the block a few times. I've also worked in restaurants and have seen employees spit on a plate of food when they didn't like the customer.

However, if I'm in a place with the grill right out front, and I personally SEE the cook spit on some food, and then put it on a plate and send it to a customer that was unknowing, then I'll boycott that place.

Back in the day when I was a young travelling engineer, I would have simply gone elsewhere and let kit be. But, now in my old age you can be sure that the management will hear from me.

I was in sales and a road-ruuner for 20 yrs. One of the best road foods is a waffle sandwich- which is not what you this. Basically a ham and cheese in whole wheat- vulcanized in the waffle iron. Order x-pickles on the side and a sweet tea to go. No slop falling in your lap and no crumbs.. K.I.S.S. @ it's finest.
Sitdown is two eggs over easy, grits, bacon and raisin toast and black coffee. Really got to be in the mood for a waffle. Haven't made a late nite visit in over 50 yrs., but with current "culture, I have no plans to.

A few weeks ago our local "Awful House" had two separate shootings in a ten day period. Several injuries but no one killed. I think one of the reasons for shootings for these and other restaurants is the frame of mind of the late night customers after a night of consumption of various substances (especially liquor).

About three times a year I go canoeing in a swamp and about three in the morning I always stop at WH. needless to say I always sit where I can see everyone and outside. And my SS easily accessible.
The food is not bad.
The worst part IMO is some of the employees act like they only work there because the nearest truck stop is too far away.

I've eaten at one WH, in Mesa, Arizona. I feel I didn't get the true WH experience, although, in all fairness, it was only 7PM. Didn't get to witness even one altercation, or interrupt the cook's smoke break.

I had waffles and bacon with a glass of milk. I'd eat there again. I wish we had them here.

Edit: My sister lived in Tyler, Texas for a few years, and when I asked her if she ever ate at WH, she looked at me like I was crazy!

In many places there will be a Waffle House visible from another Waffle House. This makes things difficult for strangers asking for directions, invariably starting out at the Waffle House and including a convoluted series of turns onto the Interstate highway.

Much easier to get around in rural Wyoming. All directions start out at "the tree", only one of which can be found every hundred miles or so. Then it is all north, south, east, or west with a detailed list of cattle guards and windmills to keep track of on the way. There really is a fenced pasture at the end of a T-intersection with a 3-legged cow, frequently cited as a landmark.

Over 50 years as a customer of Waffle House. The only things that have changed are which side of the highway it's now located, menu prices, and facial jewelry worn by the staff. The original location is now an adult novelty store, offering even fewer items I wish to have on my breakfast plate.

WHs are all over Texas and many other states. I do not remember ever being inside one.

There are none in San Antonio - the closest one is in Austin and there are only a couple there. I guess they can't compete if they don't serve breakfast tacos.

I enjoy eating at Waffle House when we visit my daughter who lives south of Atlanta. They are on every other corner there.

Reminds me of Spokane, WA, where all directions started with, "Do you know where the White Elephant is?" If you know anything about Spokane, you know what and where the White Elephant was.
