Waffle House

When I lived in Ft. Collins, 30yr ago, I ate frequently at the one along the freeway i they had a killer T-Bone, Eggs & Hash Browns.

I ate at one a couple of months ago in Arizona, it was horrible.

Dirty, no cook, waitress was trying to cook and did not know the difference between pancake and waffle batter. My waffle was just not up to par. Not her fault, the manager/owner should have come in and worked.

I don't make waffles or pancakes; I didn't know the batters were different either.

Landed late one evening with late wife#1 in the wonderful metropolis of Huntsville AL. In true non-Vegas style, most places were closed and the sidewalks rolled up.

We asked at the hotel desk if there was somewhere nearby where we could get something to eat. The girls conferred and then one looked up and said, "Do you like clean?" The look my wife gave me was priceless. Poker faced I replied, "Um, yes, that would be nice", and they directed us to the nearby Waffle House. It was OK, or maybe we were immune to the strain of botulinum they were serving. It would have passed the Vegas inspectors just about, but it certainly made you wonder where else the hotel girls could have sent us.

As you might guess, "Do you like clean?" became a bit of a catch phrase for us, especially when visiting new eateries.

I make both with the pancake mix formerly known as Aunt Jamima. They turn out just fine. Get the buttermilk version and mix with buttermilk.

When I was working I stopped at a WH every morning for my standard bacon/eggs/hashbrowns breakfast - but always brought my own eggs. The cook refused at first because all their stuff had to be approved, but since it was only for me, he agreed. Believe me, a WH breakfast with farm-fresh eggs is like home.

I believe I ate once at a Waffle House back in 1983 when I got stationed at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, was after a LONG day and night, coming home I came up on one on main street and was so hungry I decided to stop, I don't really remember if it was good, but I can say, I haven't been back since 1983

The thing I like about WH is they give you a proper rasher of bacon. And what's there not to like about a breakfast that gives you not one, not two but THREE proper portions of starch. If you want to go big, order the All Star with a double portion of Hashbrowns for only $.50 more! :D
I like the way they use the words "upgrade" and "large". Trust me-large is a double!

More likely a Denny's or maybe Sambos. Neither of which were stellar. Sambos is long gone after they had to change their name because it was "racist." They changed it and eventually went out of business for financial reasons.

The name had nothing to do with the cartoon character, it was named after the founder because that was his nickname.

Anyway, there are no WH restaurants north of PA and sadly will never be.

Ironically, Little Black Sambo was originally Indian, as there are no tigers in Africa. (If you know the story.)

After my grandson's baseball game last night , we were driving home and having the usual " What's for supper ? " discussion . The Waffle House is on the way so I told my wife to pull in . Scrambled eggs , toast , hashbrowns , and crispy bacon . Yes indeed . It hit the spot .
And a " No firearms " sign on the door . What they don't know doesn't hurt me ..

First one opened Labor Day 1955 in Avondale Estates (Dekalb county, GA) right outside of Atlanta.

Avondale Estates has an interesting history itself.
