For a while now I've been buying what guns I could from the estate of a deceased friend...He was not a member here, but many here knew him from his visits to many gun shows in Texas...He collected a large variety of firearms, and I often drooled over the pieces he brought to the Conroe show since we had adjoining tables...His S&W's have been picked over considerably leaving some of his best, and consequently highest priced, remaining...
In January, after setting up my tables, I went to look over what was left, and to talk again with his business partner with whom I've been negotiating on behalf of the widow...I was able to come to terms with him on 5 of the few remaining...One of them is this Model of 1950 Target in .44 Special, shipped per Roy Jinks in January, 1955...My SCSW4 tells me the 4" barrel is "scarce"...The Magnas, although very nice, are numbered to a slightly newer N-frame, so not likely original...The finish is extremely nice, and in the absence of any rework marks or polished flat pins, I'm assuming it's original...
Since the grips are not original, I thought of replacing them with era-correct target grips, but before finding anything suitable, this pair from our good friend Bigmtnman, Ken Driskill popped up on my radar...Being one of the first to see them, I instinctively grabbed them...I knew they would be right for this gun since my friend from whose estate the gun came liked stag also...
As another sign from Heaven, the price matched the amount I had refunded to me from a pair of giraffe bone combat grips I had bought for a Model 19-3 which did not fit any of my RB 19's...I had bought the grips in Fredericksburg last year, and made a 520 mile round trip to a Kerrville gun show last weekend to talk to the dealer who refunded my money with no problem...The kickstand in the pics was a gift from another member here, JLove008 (thanks Justin)...
I was only able to take a few photos before my camera batteries crashed...I'll be glad to hear any comments on what is one of my favorite guns for several reasons now...And my thanks to Ken for not only expediting delivery, but also autographing some of his finest work to date...
...Ben
