Just noticed these pop up. Think these may be CHP training guns? Blue grip would indicate a simunition gun I would think. Non CHP serial numbers, and no rail. But has the same bobbed hammer, and the control numbers on the frame/slide/barrel are very similar to CHP guns.

The CHP did not utilize training guns other than the blue or red plastic guns commonly seen. Those pistols in your link are 100% not CHP guns of any sort.

Summit was a good Joe, but these are new owners.
They list 75 of these guns. I cant fathom 75 training guns?
Must have been a big agency!

So mike4, those ARE the early 'd' series test/ training guns. Those were SWAT tested first before they became SIMMS training guns.

That may be true, my point was they aren't CHP pistols, CHP training pistols or otherwise which was the OP's question.

The serial numbers start with a "VJH" which would normally be assigned to a specific agency if it was an LE pistol which I'm assuming it is. As you probably know, CHP 4006TSW's have a "CHP" prefix on the serial numbers.

Edited: I beg your pardon, after rereading your post, it in fact may be a SIMMS pistol. I was referring to duty pistols and training pistols issued to the CHP stations.

So all these .40cals. were originally 9mm? Did they do that to save ammo cost 40 vs 9?

Do we know if all of these will need an extractor replacement or just if they have a problem with extraction?

TY!!!!!!!!!!! Dave

Hi John! Hope you are well! I think I switched to this thread from another and may have goofed-up! I'm looking at one of the CHP Simms? guns with the blue painted grip.

Dave

I picked up one of those summit 4006TSW blue grip CHP test guns with the box . Product code is 149544 if anybody was wondering . The gun would not cycle more than two rounds of 9mm without a failure to extract with a 5906TSW barrel installed . Ran perfect with 40 of course . Just wanted to mention that because it's stated that the extractors are adjusted for 9mm. And if you're buying it for a conversion you may be disappointed .

The VJH serial number 4006TSW being sold by Summit with Dxxxx markings on slide/barrel/frame were supposedly pistols purchased by CHP for training purposes and originally converted to 9mm SIMMS pistols (special barrels?) for training then put back to 40 SW (original barrel reinstalled?) for sale after they were taken out of service.

A picture is attached of what is purported to be a 9mm Simunition Barrel in a 4046 Slide on a 4046 frame.

My VJH4xxx pistol came with one well used yellow follower 11 rd magazine with red base and grips were painted blue. I have seen pistols with attached black TSW steel rail and others with no rail. Mine has no rail and the frame is not drilled for a rail. It has the usual Loaded Chamber Indicator Port on top. The safety lever is Decock Only and has a spring return to fire position.

The VJH 4006TSW Dxxxx come back product code 149544 (10/2002) as compared to product code 149545 (12/2006) for the CHP serial number 4006TSW with integral frame rail and with the Exxxx slide/barrel/frame markings.

So draw what conclusions you will - I would guess the 2002 purchase was actually an early CHP issue, later converted to SIMMS for training after the CHP 4006TSW with integral rail came in 4 years later.

I have fired 3 of the VJH 4006TSW pistols with no problem with extractor - however mine had a problem with a bent ejector lever which I replaced along with a bent sideplate and it now works fine. No problems after replacements.

9mm SIMMS barrel not same as 5906 or 5906TSW barrel - see attached picture of a 9mm SIMMS barrel in a 4046. I would not try to convert a 40SW to regular 9mm ammo.

Dave, Not sure if you are looking at auctions or going direct to Summit Gunbrokers.

For a while Summit was listing a dozen or so at a time on Gunbroker - first couple of batches were no reserve and sold from about $260-360. Some with rails, some without. First several batches were without case and some were pretty beat up.

Then they got smart and set a Reserve, first $339.99, then lowered to $319.99. More recent ones mostly are with case and without rail (not drilled for rail).

They sold over 150 pistols on GB over a couple of months. Last group I think they had saturated the market as they only sold 4 or so out of 12 or more listed. So now they seem to be listing 1 at a time to get the price up.

But they still have for sale on their website at $329.99. I would try to contact them via their website email or phone and try to get a few pictures and pick one and negotiate.

But that might be a challenge as they are less than spectacular on responding to email - I think at one time their listing said they only respond to email / phone on 2 days a week = Tues and either Thurs or Fri - cant recall exactly?

Pistols are dirty esp under grips, but they shoot good (after I fixed the bent ejector lever problem on mine) and by comparison of recoil spring to a new one, it appears the 3 I have handled all had new recoil springs when they were put back to 40SW. No problems observed with extractors on 3 pistols and 9 mags.

Mags are well used with yellow followers and will need rework (followers, springs, and baseplates). The follower on one of the 3 mags would not come all the way up - not sure if it was bad spring, damaged follower, or bent metal shell - didnt pay enough attention. Or just buy more as good used 11 rd AccuGlide mags are available with better blue followers at about $25-$30 ea.

Best, Ed

A wealth of information, Ed!!!! Thank you so very much!!! I missed-out on an ex-Cleveland PD 5943 a few weeks ago at a show and have been looking for one ever since. But, the chances of me finding one anytime soon is remote. So, I may look closer at one of these. I just love the 3rd Gen Stainless guns, especially the ex-PD.
When I first started collecting, I was in LE. I'd get together with super friends who are now gone, like Frank, Jack, and Vic and go to the Ohio Gun Collectors at the IX Center in Cleveland. Wow! What a show! It was huge and had everything a young collector would drool over. We had a ball. I saw the 3rd Gen Cleveland PD and thought it would remind me of those days.

Take care!! Dave
