"Cleveland Browns legend Jim Brown has died at the age of 87.

Brown is one of the greatest running backs of all time, having won three MVPs (including in his rookie season in 1957) and being named to nine All-Pro teams, eight of which he was a First-teamer.

Brown led the NFL in rushing yards eight times and rushing touchdowns on five occasions - he won the NFL Championship in 1964."

I remember watching a game in 1959 at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium with my father, Browns vs Colts. We sat in the upper tier of seats, and had a really good downward view of the action. The Colts had just come off "The Greatest Game Ever Played" winning the 1958 NFL Championship, and had John Unitas in his prime, yet my Dad said "Watch number 32; you'll never see his like again." Brown into the line off center, his white jersey #32 vanishing into a mass of Colt blue, the pile shudders, is driven back. Brown 5 yards. #32 walks, oh so slowly back to the huddle. Brown in a sweep, breaks a tackle at the line, accelerates, breaks a couple more in the backfield; Brown 16 yards, walks slowly, in an almost painful looking shuffle, back to the huddle. Brown off-tackle, white jersey 32 disappears into a mass of blue, the mass explodes with 32 bursting out of it, and it's Brown 12 yards. Every carry for more than 30 tries with the defense knowing he was coming, he always gained yardage, in fact, nearly 200 yards and 5 touchdowns! The Browns stunned the Colts 38-31 in spite of Unitas passing for nearly 400 yards.
Jim Brown was a BIG back for his time, as big as most linebackers, and with his stunning speed, power and agility, he could break tackles, fake defenders out of their shoes, or outrun them. Jim Brown WAS the Cleveland offense that day and many other times. There was no stopping him. Surely he was one of the greatest running backs of all time.
RIP Jim; thanks for the memories.
