Here's a Heiser belt and holster that came together and may well have been ordered together. The belt is a model 53, first cataloged in my number 32 catalog circa 1939. As shown it was made with an integral curve or drop. The holster is a model 710 double loop style, both the belt and holster are floral carved and the loops are .38/.357 size. As shown MAG. 6 1/2 is inked on the back of the holster and that's a 6 1/2" model 27-2 in it.

The 'blackened' loops happens when the neatsfoot oil is applied, and guaranteed if one dips the completed belt into the oil bath. Correctly done with a large sponge, in stages, because different leathers in different thicknesses (looping is quite thin vs the belt itself) absorb oil at different rates. The heavier oiling is stronger, though; leather gets some of its strength from lubricity among the fibres and this is naturally provided only by the collagen inside and the tanner's oiling.

John your images are stellar! Owning the real thing is never as good because it's rare that a museum set is so well it and seen from so close.
