Is the relationship closer than with your brothers? Is this someone you work with? Are you within 5 years of a probable rest home move? Unless the answer to the first question is YES, I would set an average of what similar guns run on GB and price it at that, perhaps with a 5% discount.

If the answer to question #1 is yes, take $100 off, or trade him for an equal value N frame.

How close of a friend, I just sold a friend of 50+ years my M&P 40c and a milt sparks holster with 6 mags along with 1800 rounds of 40 ammo for 800 bucks. I figured what the gun was worth and what a life time friendship is worth weight them both and came up with a figure. it was my last 40 cal so all my 40 ammo went with the last 40 cal. gun.

As i've said numerous times over the years the -3 is the best version of the 686 never understood why everyone thinks the -4 is the -3 still has GA target grips flash chromed hammer and trigger new yolk retention upgrade the -4 has what drilled and tapped giving up grips flash chromed parts sq butt a few of the -4 s also have left over parts and frames

Yeah, me too. It would have to be a REALLY good friend for me to even consider selling them such a desirable S&W revolver.

BUT, if it was that good of a friend, I'd look at the average price of similar guns sold on GB and then discount that price about 10%. Maybe 20% if it was a friend that I considered to be "closer than a brother".

So I guess my answer is really "it all depends on the friend"...

Depends on the friend, but probably sell it for what I would anyone else. My friends can afford to pay the going rate.

I agree, especially if it's a 2.5" with combats; the post football target stocks aren't that big of a loss. The only exception would be the -4 plus 7 shot. I think they're the pinnacle of the 686 family tree.

Depends on the friend. I have friends on a "wealth index" from dirt poor to $$$ flush. I'm probably going 10% under (current) retail for $ flush and deep discount for -$$$ who should have something they want. Joe

I agree... but he is NOT a close friend!

See I won't sell my 2 1/2 686's. Yes I have more than one.. and I surly won't sell my 2 1/2 66 Combat Magnums! I doubt I'd even give them to a close friend.. hahaha. May get buried with me when I kick the bucket (that way in 1000 years I'd be worth something.)

I actually prefer short barrels.

Soon getting a Colt King Cobra Carry 2 inch snub .357.. fits my Buchmeyer cross draw made for a 2 inch S&W M10 .38. I have this Marlowe/Hammer/Spade complex...

I'd be packing this 686 but.. it won't fit that Buchmeyer holster! I think the Cobra will... and I do love brass bead front sights.

Gun Deals

I've sold guns to friends and relatives. They know I collect guns so it usually starts with " If you have or run across a (Insert gun) call me". So If that particular gun presents it self, I call them and tell them this particular gun is for sale for $xxx. Usually on the low side of current prices. I have also given pistols and rifles away, Usually to friends and for relatives kids. If it is a nice firearm I usually say I want first dibs if they tire of it and want to sell.

I've sold a couple of guns to good friends who "needed" them Y2K and "one of the riots" at what I'd paid for the guns years earlier. So a fairly hefty discount on the current market value.... but I didn't lose money.{except inflation}

Just a "want" then "low market" if I really wanted to part with the gun.
