As some of you might remember, I enjoy ACP revolvers. In the course of collecting, I have come across a supply of parts and have kept a few. I am contemplating my next build but not sure which barrel I am going to use.

Here are my choices, all ACP, all S&W.

Some are from the Model 1950, some the Model 1955 and some from the Model 1917. I am leaning toward adjustable sights so that rules out the 1917s. Not sure which barrel to use.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, you’ve probably already got something similar but from my perspective a 4-inch 1955 target would be an attractive weapon, particularly with white outline/red ramp sights. But that is just my own thought based on a “I wish I had…” idea from long ago. Somewhere I have a picture of such a revolver Doc44 posted here, but I don’t recall his gun having the white/red sights. There’s my .02. :)

Something like this?

My choice of sights is black on black but the McGivern bead is becoming a favorite.

Nice collection of.45 barrels Kevin. What length is the top left barrel?? Once upon a time I had a .25-2 with a barrel cut by Andy to 3 1/2”, now resides in western Pa. Cool length but only a 1/2” shorter than your 4”. Maybe a 3” or a 5”. Was just at Andy’s about 3 weeks ago. Tough decision, Larry

Kevin, I love the one you posted above. Not sure what you are planning but it will be interesting so see what you decide on. Makes me think I need something similar. I don't own a .45acp revolver. I do love .44sp however!

Larry,

On the left side,

The top barrel is a Model 1950, 6.5”.

Below that is also a Model 1950 but it has had a lot of work done to it. First it was cut to 4”. Then, the rib was removed EXCEPT at the muzzle where it provides a ramp for a front sight as yet to be determined

Third down, a Model 1955 cut to 4.5 inches with the rib cut to 4”. The thought was to cut a port in that half inch to aid in recoil recovery for competition.?

The last on the left is the barrel that came out of the bubba ‘d revolver shown above. It was cut to 3.5” with a chop saw. Nothing square or even smooth.

On the right,

A Model 1917 cut to 4”

A 5.5” Model 1917

A 5.5” Model 1917

Not shown are several ACP cylinders I have. All I need is an N frame minus barrel and cylinder, (or with barrel and cylinder) and I can start assembling my next revolver!

44 S&W Special, 45 ACP. TomAto, tomahto!!

If you are already set up for the Special build another one. In the holster, on paper, in the field, no one can tell one from the other.

Performance wise, rather much the same. 245-255 grains at 900 (or more) fps, been knocking down game and bad guys for generations! You can even lump the long Colt in there with the others.

The big advantage with the 44 S&W Special is they actually made quite a few with 4” barrels. 45 long Colt also a bunch. 45 ACP, 1950 or 1955, very few.

And any N frame after 1950 is strong enough to hold reasonable loads. I hold my 1917s to hardball or equivalent.

What barrel length are you considering?

Kevin

I like 4" barrels. If you must have adjustable sights I would use the top left barrel cut down to 4".

The barrel immediately below it is also a Model 1950, cut to 4” with the rib removed. Not blued, so it looks odd?. It would look a lot like a Model 625 Mountain Gun when assembled. Hmmmm? One of the hard chrome finishes! Good idea, thank you for mentioning it!

I'd go with the second down on the left-dunno if the front ramp is wide enuf for a dovetail cut sight- it would make sight change easier than cutting a channel and then drilling a 1/64" hole to pin something like front fiber sight.
