Loose, lose, and auto correct

It's not autocorrect, it's simply that many people cannot spell...
True. Like doing arithmetic, some people are good at it and some not. My uncle, knowing I had an interest in words and who gave me my first dictionary - an OED in 1960, which I still have - used to say, "What's the use of a dictionaryif you can't spell a word to look it up?" :) It was the only book I was allowed to read at meals, and I think I drove my parents crazy discovering new words while my dinner languished on the plate.

Lose and Loose confusion has mildly concerned me for years, but never enough to pursue the problem. Thanks to this great forum, I now know it is not auto correct, but something else even worse.

Identification of bad spelling and grammar is a useful tool to assess the intelligence of the source. Language and accurate communication are attributes of advanced civilization and knowledge, similar to good grooming and hygiene. There are exceptions, but there are few truly knowledgeable writers that mangle their prose, particularly with today's AI assisted spelling and grammar checkers.

It's an indicator, but not foolproof. A couple of the most technically gifted people I have ever known were awful spellers. One was my boss. "Steve, can you peer review this report for me. Oh, and fix all my spelling while you're there." Lovely man, because he knew that some of his heavy math was likely beyond me.

This is why I have a coffee cup to remind me[emoji1]

I might shake my head at a post, but I never correct someone’s grammar.

....of course then there was the time I was out of town and sent my wife a good night text. I thought and I intended to send her the message "I love you muchly". Instead she got "I love you Michelle".:(:o

Anyone think they can talk their way out of that one?

Err, no. You’re out of town, so stay that way.

That’s good advise. :D

We have an absent comrade who would hover in wait to pounce on errors in diction. He claimed they were PSAs and "teaching moments" because he wrote for gun and knife rags and didn't want the gun community being perceived as rubes on open forums.

He wasn't bashful about stripping the bark off someone who misspelled.

All he ever did was alienate a lot of folks here.

Shirt Wanted Inaccurate but readable text.

I saw an online ad for a shirt that could be read and understood, but it did not have standard correctly spelled words
Some "words" even had numerical character stead of alphabetic.

IIRC the shirt was a quote about perception.
Reader could understand the strange text because of perception.

I want to buy that shirt.

What I wonder is, for the people who misspell "loose" when they mean "didn't win", how do they spell "loose" when they actually mean "not tight"? Loose, lose, and auto correct
That's easy. Not tight = Sober.

One of our favorite auto-corrects comes from my wife. Every time she tried to type in Barnes and Noble it would change it to Barnes and Noodle. She was a "little" frustrated.

Darling late wife was an English major. I have the "silently correcting" t-shirt. You may walk on the ceiling if you can was always my favorite for child rearing. Between required two, among for three or more. Eldest also requires three. And so it goes. Fewer was for something you could count, less required measuring some other way. Lots more, that nobody pays attention to anymore. Except me, and my t-shirt that, like my gun shirts, do not leave the homestead. Yes, I do miss her.
