4506-The legend

They are indeed outstanding firearms

It's none of my business what others do with their guns. But don't expect me to comprehend. lol!

Truth be told, I like it when people buy guns and lock them away. Like I said, I just bought a couple of new, 20 and 35 year old guns. I love them!

That fine old 336 Texan killed a deer that I'll eat on for the next year.

I've gotten on a holy tear starting 2 months ago. It started with an old 645 police gun. Then I bought a gorgeous 2002 4506. Last week- I haven't even gotten it yet, a nice used TSW4566.

I called Novak's last week about possibly milling the 645 slide for a dove tail front sight. The "kid" I spoke to acted like he didn't know what a 645 was. That was a little disturbing. lol. I sent the 645 back to Smith. The right side of the safety will not stay tight. The rear sight is all beat up. And asked them to give it a good once over. It'll be interesting to see what comes back.

I had one back i 1990 put Pachmayr grips on it and it looked and felt great. Put maybe 200 rounds in it and it got stolen from my house in 1991 the ser number is TVK 4733 if any one sees it out there please let me know i would like it back. I did make a police report but you know how that goes.

I have one of these with Novak sights. They are built to last a lifetime. I don't think you could wear it out if you tried.
I also have 2 645's and they are just as nice and just as well built
Both made when guns were made to last generations

Love my 4506. Great gun built like the legendary brick s***house. Like others here I would be very surprised if anyone managed to wear one out.

Hi, I recently sent a message to Smith asking if they could replace the barrel on my 645 and "Frank" responded that they don't service that model any more.

Back in 1973 I had a Colt MkIV stolen from me. I called police and they got a full report including the serial number. I didn't think I'd ever see it again and for some years forgot about it. One day I got a call from the chief of police who happened to be an old class mate, and he told me they had found the pistol in San Raphael CA but it was tied up in a murder trial and would be a few months before they sent it to him. Some months passed and he called again for me to come and pick it up. I had in my mind it's going to be scratched up, rusty but got a surprise. It looked just like it did the day it was stolen. That pistol made a trip from Charlotte, NC where it was stolen to CA. Don't give up home of never finding yours. I thought mine was gone for good as well.

You'd think surely they still had some barrels lying around. Unlike other parts, that's something that seldom wears out.

Yendor357-I said I put some 900 rounds through it. It may have been 800-1200...don't recall for sure. I guess I had in my mind(since I had several others I shot more) don't push this reliability. Parts are not easy to come by for these models anymore. Knowing it was good to go in any situation I decided to hold on to it and keep it close by the bed as my go to pistol in case of need. It's the only one I trust 100% for that.

These pistols are tanks. I have several of them and carried one as a duty gun for many years. They are extremely reliable---just don't fall out of a boat with one in your holster. You are going down!! I have a few odds and ends of parts for these old pistols sort of rat holed for a rainy day, but have never needed them. One of the things that makes then so reliable is slide mass. Once that thing gets moving, either coming or going, it's hard to stop !!

I had the 4006, 5906, and 4506. Gave them to my daughter as a gift. What was I thinking? She is a good kid. I since replaced the 4006, 5906. Can't afford the 4506. But that's OK! My son gets the rest of what I have.

If you wanna get your kicks, watch Training Day with Denzel Washinton. He wields two 4506's in a double shoulder holster and he ain't a nice guy.
My little 3rd gen family as of date.

$700 in 1989 equals $1650 today, if the interweb is correct.

No wonder 29 year old Rod couldn't afford one back in the day.

You would think, if all the drawings were on CNC programming, it wouldn't be all that cost prohibitive to crank a few thousand 4506s out; do the slide in black DLC…..I'd buy one. Maybe offer matching .45/10MM sets. LOK could make some bodacious Bogies for it; One can only dream.

Of the rifles and pistols/revolvers I have this would be the last one I'd ever let go for any reason. I bought new in Sept 1990 after reading it's virtues in Combat magazine by Massaud Ayoob. it was the greatest investment I've made to date. I think it was $509 then. Never once with any sort of ammo has it ever failed to feed, fire and eject. It's fired everything from 200 gr SWCs to the notorious "Flying Ashtray" with equal reliability. After some 500-800 rounds I'd trust it with my life. I replaced the recoil spring once in it and retired it at around 900 rounds.I'm convinced you could chamber frozen green beans in it. It resides by the bedside.

I bought one thinking i would replace the 645 I already had. Found out I liked the 645 much better, so I sold the 4506 and haven't regretted doing so.

I didn't think they would service the 645 anymore. Hope S&W is able to fix yours.

Tell me about the 4566 in the lower right hand corner, Please.
That was my first 3rd gen, I paid $350 bucks for it in "not so" pristine shape. I completely disassembled it, polished every internal surface that made contact, upgraded all the springs with Wolf springs, now she's as slick and smooth as snot on a wet elm tree. Replaced the bobbed hammer with one from the 4566, then I refinished her the way I would have liked S&W to, imo.
Polished and brushed.
In retrospect, I'd have had S&W re-blast it or had left the finish alone. It's gorgeous to look at, but reduces the collectability a little which doesn't bother me really because I never sell any of my guns.

Got lucky, in the right place, as the saying goes...

$550 for all this.

This is where the wood grips went, my even rarer integral railed 4566.

Didn't realize the integral railed 4566s were rare. I have one that was an original sample gun used for the Fresno County contract. Very nice pistol but I don't think I have ever shot it and it looks like it was not shot prior to my owning it.

Hmmm...For some reason I'm not getting notifications of current posts anymore. I was for a while earlier but not in the last couple of days.

I think the 3rd Gen S&W pistols will go down in history as the best they've ever made...IMHO.
