Smith and Wesson model 520

Back when the 520 was not adopted as the issue revolver for uniformed troopers, the agency selected the 28-2, 4". It had a short service life with the NYSP (circa '79-'81) and was then replaced by the 681, 4" stainless - that model soldiered on until 1990 and the Glock 17.

03clyde,

Thanks for the clarity. I've been running with false information all these years, so my apologies to all.

Question, I was also under the impression that in 79/80 they were moving away from the M28 (afterall that platform had been around since the late 50's) to the (cancelled) M520. since that is incorrect what were they moving from when selecting the M28?

As an agency it sure looks like they changed their armament fairly often.

Thanks, in advance

My Letter mentions NYSP was moving away from fixed sight K frame magnums. My guess would be M13's because they were staying with a blued gun, but could have been M65's too, I suppose.

IIRC, the Model 28 had some flame cutting issues. The adjustable rear sights were getting banged and knocked around as well. The MOD 13-1, ('74-'78) preceded the 28. The 10-6 ('72-'73) was right before the 13-1. Essentially same gun: blued, 4", and chambered in .357MAG.
