I added a manual safety to my subcompact 2.0. I know, I know, you’re gonna say I shouldn’t have or I screwed something up, but it’s a simple process and worked fine since I did it months ago. Today, I had the slide locked back and the safety on and pressed the trigger. The trigger moved back and it shouldn’t have. Then I dropped the slide and pulled the trigger and the striker clicked even though the safety is on. The odd thing is it doesn’t always do this. Sometimes the safety will prevent the trigger from moving while slide locked back and sometimes it won’t. It only clicked once with the safety on and slide closed.

I'm not sure, but I assume by doing this you have voided the factory warranty. I would also assume by doing this alteration, you have incurred a considerable amount of liability once held by the manufacturer, and placed it on yourself. Not a good thing.

Since the gun is now clearly unsafe, perhaps a better plan would be to return the altered gun to it's original configuration, (without the manual safety) and purchase a 2.0 that was manufactured with a factory installed safety mechanism?

At the very least, I would reverse the manual safety install and see if the problem persists.

For the 2.0, you really only need 3 pieces to add a safety to it (since they already have the cutouts).

The safety, the safety detent, and the safety detent spring.

Do you have pictures of the engagement between the safety and the detent as it sits in the sear housing block?

I have the three pieces. I’ll tear it down this weekend and see if something slipped.

As for voiding my warranty, they can go scratch. I wouldn’t send it in like this if I needed, I don’t carry the gun at all, it’s a range toy, and since S&W used to give the frame plugs, and now they sell them, they know people are removing the safety

On the M&P's, all the right leg of the safety does is prevent the trigger bar from moving rearward far enough to reach the sear. With the slide off, work the safety off and on while pulling the trigger to see if you can see what is happening. It's really a very simple but not very robust assembly. I believe there has been another post previously where someone was having the same issue you are experiencing. It seems to me that the issue was resolved by having to bend/adjust the right arm of the safety assembly to provide for a more positive block on the trigger bar travel.

Does this have anything remotely to do with the question?

There was no question in the opening post, just a description of a failed modification that resulted in a dangerous situation with regard to safety of the gun in question.

My post was prompted by my concern for this forum member with regard to his/her personal liability and safety, period.

BTW, the frame plug mentioned above was originally designed for 1.0 LE guns that had the key lock omitted. Or at least I expect it's the same plug. A NOS 1.0 frame I bought didn't even have a place for the key lock.

That’s what it is.

Took the slide off and checked. The safety prevents the trigger bar from moving. The arm of the safety is not fully extending which allows the trigger bar to slide over.

If you want to try a different safety assembly, I have a couple sets that I installed on my M1.0 guns, decided I didn't like the position of the safety levers for my grip and took them back out. I'd be happy to send you another set, no charge, if you are interested. PM me with your info if interested.
