Model 17-6

It looked like a .38 when I first saw it yesterday. When I realized it was a model 17 for that price I bought it. I was still none the wiser though-a little puzzled about the 4" barrel. Now I see in my Standard Catalog Smith & Wesson 3rd ed. that :"Some early 17-6s reported without full lug."

I believe I'll be shopping for combat stocks.

It’s an unusual model 17 variant, more like a heavy barrel/wide rib model 18. Cool gun.

It came with regular service grips. I had these on hand. I'm looking for some age-appropriate combats.

Nice Find, OP. I have always LUSTED after the 4” full lug with combat grips model!

In fact this one did when I got it. Some of the 17-6s came with the Magnas then. Okay.

Well I am not selling mine They are out there but not common, you can find plenty of 617's but the 17-5s and -6s not so much.

Combats are gorgeous and feel nice and they are pricey. If you like them and want to spend the cash, I’m all for it.

Do understand for certain however… they are not proper for that revolver.

Somewhat less than half of the 17-6 came with the standard ribbed target barrel and the 6-inchers came with Goncalo Alves Target stocks. The later dash-6 guns came with the full lug barrel and all of the full lug barrel 17-6 guns came with Combats.

They're beautiful guns. How does it shoot? I am looking at a Model 17-5 with a 6" blue barrel made between 1988-1989 in great shape. It's $900 shipped. I think I am going to go for it.

A fine looking gun, but it is not a full lug.

Thanks for the replies everybody! Very informative. I guess I'll hold off on the combats. I haven't shot it yet, but I'm quite confident it'll be fine.

Looks more like the 18-4 I found a couple of weeks ago. When I glanced at it in a display case I at first thought it to be a combat masterpiece, 38 sp.

No expert here on models or anywhere close. I never knew that they made a model 17 with a 4" barrel, thought they were all 6 or 8 3/8". Also thought all the 17's had the patridge target front, not a ramp. Please someone correct me if I am wrong, would like to know.

I think at one time you were right. When S&W discontinued the Model 18 the 4" barrel length became an option on the Model 17 I think. Mine is a 17-4 and has a six inch barrel with Patridge sight.

Yes, I did a wilkpedia search and saw where they in later years made 4" barrels. Mine is a 17-2, and a compainion 14-2, I know the 14 from 1968 at the latest, when I purchased it. I got the 17 a couple of years later, so not sure about that one.
I ended up overseas in the USAF where we could not have any rifled arms so lost interest, then was busy raising and educating a son, so they were on the back burner for a lot of years.

I also had never seen a 17 with a lugged barrel, nor a ramp front sight, I guess there were a lot more options in the years when I was not paying any attention.
